Places on the mapAbout this area
Šiauliai works as a stop between Vilnius and Riga or a visit with an overnight stay. In the centre, combine the pedestrian boulevard, cathedral area and Lake Talkša. The Hill of Crosses lies outside the city in Šiauliai District, so it needs a separate outward and return journey. This guide helps you choose a manageable day.
Start with your arrival and return
From Vilnius, compare LTG Link trains to and from Šiauliai. From Riga, check coach and international train tickets in both directions. Mark your return departure first: a direct service does not necessarily allow a same-day trip with time at the hill.
If you arrive late, spend that evening in the city and visit the hill the following day. If your return is early, avoid squeezing the hill and a museum into a short gap. This guide does not fix fares or departure times: use a search for your date and the operator’s service notices.
The city: a continuous walking route
Start on the Vilniaus Street pedestrian boulevard at the Cock Clock near Tilžės Street. Continue to Resurrection Square and Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral, then go down to Sundial Square and Lake Talkša beside the Iron Fox. This connects the centre and lakeside in one walking direction.
Our editorial estimate is about 2–3 hours for this outdoor route with brief stops, excluding lunch and the return to your station. The cathedral is a place of worship: enter only when visiting is permitted and without disturbing services. A tower visit is a separate arrangement.
With extra time, choose one museum, such as the Photography Museum by the boulevard, and check its opening hours separately. Uneven paving, slopes and temporary works may affect access; confirm the particular section if mobility requirements matter to your visit.
The Hill of Crosses: a separate part of the day
Plan the hill as a separate excursion. Official directions describe a Joniškis-bound bus from Šiauliai bus station to Domantai, then about 2 km on foot each way. Confirm the return stop, services and time before setting off; the bus does not stop beside the crosses.
If a longer walk or coordinating buses does not suit you, arrange both the outward drive and collection in advance. We suggest 45–90 minutes at the hill itself; with local buses, walking and waiting, leave at least a half-day window from Šiauliai. This is an editorial planning estimate, before adding travel from Vilnius or Riga.
On arrival, take an unhurried walk around the hill, then visit the information centre if it is open. Follow the paths, keep passages clear and respect people praying. The separate Hill of Crosses page covers the history and visiting notes.
Choose the order around confirmed transport
With an early arrival and confirmed transport, visit the hill first, then take the city walk and lunch. If the local bus leaves later, start with the boulevard, setting a clear time to return to the bus station. Your confirmed connections determine the sequence.
For a day trip from Riga, find a workable return and sufficient sightseeing time first. If they do not fit, stay overnight or arrange a separate excursion. A Šiauliai city walk without the hill also makes a worthwhile short stop.
Šiauliai: frequently asked questions
Is the Hill of Crosses in central Šiauliai?
No. It is in Šiauliai District, about 12 km from the city. Arrange the outward and return journey separately.
Is one day enough for Šiauliai and the Hill of Crosses?
It can cover a short city walk and the hill if your arrival, local transport and return fit. Bus waits, longer museum visits or late arrival make an overnight stay more practical.
Does the bus go directly to the Hill of Crosses?
The official tourism directions describe Domantai stop and about 2 km on foot each way. Check your day’s service and the return stop.
What if I have only a few hours?
Choose the boulevard, Resurrection Square and cathedral area; with more time continue to Sundial Square and Lake Talkša. Leave for the hill only with a confirmed return plan.
