Photography Museum

Lithuania's Only Photography Museum

Šiauliai Photography Museum stands out because it presents photography not as one art form among others, but as an independent world of art, technology, document, and memory. The Šiauliai Aušra Museum describes it as the only exhibition of this profile, the history of photography, in Lithuania.

The museum collections reach almost 150,000 exhibits and valuables. That scale makes it possible to speak not only about photographs, but also about cameras, processes, photographers' work, publications, archives, and changing photographic technologies.

Since 1973: Antanas Dilys's Idea

The museum began on 25 May 1973, when the first photography exhibition opened in the Šiauliai Aušra History and Ethnography Museum through the initiative of photographer and photojournalist Antanas Dilys. At that time there was no specialized photography museum anywhere in the Soviet Union, and only about 30 institutions of this kind existed worldwide.

In 1976 the museum settled in its permanent home on Vilniaus Street, in an interwar building in the setting of the old town and city centre. The broader context matters: the Šiauliai Aušra Museum, founded in 1923, is one of Lithuania's oldest and largest museums, with about 275,000 exhibits and eight specialized branches.

Exhibitions, Technology, and the Vitas Luckus Centre

The museum hosts exhibitions, educational activities, meetings, and the Vitas Luckus Photography Centre, established in 2014 by a tripartite agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Šiauliai Aušra Museum, and Tatjana Luckienė-Aldag. The centre focuses on Lithuanian art photography of the second half of the twentieth century. The visit changes with the temporary programme: one time historical technology may dominate, another time contemporary or author photography.

The Photography Museum works best when viewed slowly. Photographs ask for time: to read framing, light, period details, city signs, and human posture.

A Museum on the City Boulevard and a Terrace

The museum is located on Vilniaus Street, in the area of Šiauliai's central pedestrian boulevard. This is practical: a visit can be combined with the cathedral, Venclauskiai House, a city cafe, or a short walk.

A separate advantage is the roof terrace. At the time of research the museum stated that the terrace could be visited for a separate symbolic ticket. On a clear day it connects the museum's photography theme with the real view of central Šiauliai from above.

Opening Hours and Tickets

At the time of research, the Šiauliai Aušra Museum listed the Photography Museum as open Tuesday-Friday 10:00-18:00 and Saturday-Sunday 11:00-17:00. The ticket was 5 EUR, reduced 2.50 EUR, groups of 15 or more 4 EUR, reduced group 2 EUR, guided tour 20 EUR, terrace 1 EUR, reduced terrace 0.50 EUR, and the audio guide was free. Check the official information before travelling.

Allow 1-1.5 hours for the main visit, and longer with a temporary exhibition, educational activity, or terrace. The building has a lift for visitors with mobility difficulties.
