Lake Graužys, Graužys, Lentvaris (Graužys) Lake
Graužys is both a lake and Lentvaris' urban waterfront park
Lentvaris Lake is commonly called Graužys or Lake Graužys. It covers about 30.4-30.5 hectares, extends for roughly one kilometre, and is up to about half a kilometre wide. The deepest point is given as 34.5 metres, although the designated bathing area beside the shore is far shallower.
The lake stretches across the north-western part of Lentvaris. Manor parkland meets one shore, while residential districts and the public recreation zone reach others. The tall spire of the Church of the Annunciation rises beyond the trees and acts as the clearest landmark in views across the water.
The Google Maps coordinates 54.6559993, 25.0365993 are a representative point in the lake, not an entrance or beach gate. For the public recreation area, navigate towards Klevų al. 44A and follow local signs. The Institute of Hygiene places its bathing-water monitoring point at 54.6542, 25.0386.
The Tyszkiewicz family turned a natural lake into part of the manor landscape
The Graužys basin is glacial, but the lake's present scale is not solely natural. The Tyszkiewicz family, who owned Lentvaris Manor in the nineteenth century, enlarged the smaller water body and shaped it as part of their designed estate. Trakai Historical National Park describes the present lake of about 30 hectares as an artificial component of Lentvaris Park.
The manor was developed on a peninsula. The park authority records an approach road about half a kilometre long, flanked by water on both sides. In 1897, French landscape architect Édouard François André and his son René worked at Lentvaris, transforming a geometrical park into a Romantic landscape of ponds, a cascading stream, grotto, rockwork, and winding paths.
The lake was more than a backdrop to the palace. Contemporary visitors stayed in manor villas, while a waterside Riviera café was associated with concerts and entertainment. Do not expect all those buildings to survive as one intact ensemble beside the present beach. The relationship between water, peninsula, and park is the strongest historical feature still legible today.
A 2019 project made the shore a fully equipped recreation zone
Trakai District Municipality completed a recreation project worth roughly 1.5 million euros in 2019. It provided walking and cycling paths, car and bicycle parking, rest areas, and the distinctive curving timber promenade that brings visitors close to the water.
The project inventory also included a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, a multi-use sports court, two volleyball courts, outdoor showers, a drinking-water point, boat jetty, rest platform, changing cabin, fire area, and bins. This is the list of installed infrastructure, not a guarantee that every fixture will be operational on any particular day in 2026.
The most rewarding short walk follows the promenade beside reeds and opens broad views across the lake. Do not assume that the entire shoreline forms a continuous public loop: other sectors contain manor grounds, more natural banks, and residential property. Stay on signed public paths.
The public bathing area is shallow, but the lake beyond is very different
The Institute of Hygiene's 2024 profile describes a public beach about 50 metres long, with sand and small stones. One toilet, one changing cabin, and waste containers are listed. The bathing bottom is mainly sand mixed with small stones, while other parts of the lake can be muddy.
The monitored bathing area has a stated average depth of 1.5 metres and maximum of 2.5 metres, deepening gradually. Those figures do not describe the whole of Graužys, whose deepest point reaches 34.5 metres. Swim within your ability, supervise children continuously, and never jump from a jetty without checking local signs and depth.
A sample taken on 7 July 2026 met bathing-water standards: the municipality reported 8 intestinal enterococci and 16 E. coli per 100 millilitres. That result applies only to the sampling date, not the whole season. Check the newest report before every visit, and avoid swimming after heavy rain or if the water changes colour, smells unusual, or carries visible algal scum.
Arrival, timing, and considerate use of a popular urban shore
The public zone is approached from Klevų Avenue, while Lentvaris railway station is within walking distance through town. On summer weekends and during events such as Midsummer or Lentvaris Fest, traffic arrangements may change, parking fills, and the shore becomes much busier than on an ordinary day.
No separate entrance charge or set opening hours are published for this outdoor public space. A boat jetty does not by itself mean that a permanent rental operator is present. Check signs, current rules, and seasonal restrictions before boating, fishing, or lighting a fire.
On 27 July 2026, the lake's Google Maps listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from 323 reviews. Popularity brings responsibility: take all litter away, keep out of reed beds, avoid disturbing birds, leave rescue and jetty access clear, and remember that part of the shoreline is residential.
