Varnikai Trail
A Nature Route next to Trakai
Varnikai Nature Trail is one of the easiest ways in Trakai to move from town and castle crowds into forest and bog. It runs through Varnikai Forest and the Ilgelis bog area.
It makes a strong contrast to the classic Trakai route: after the castle, cafes, and lake embankments, the trail offers a quieter forest path, boardwalk, bog pools, and protected nature.
About 4-5 km
Sources give slightly different lengths: Trakai Tourist Information Centre gives 5 km, while Saugoma.lt data mentions about 4 km and a 1.5-2 hour duration.
In practice, plan for about 4-5 km and do not rush. Stops at the bog, viewpoints, and information points naturally add time.
Ilgelis Bog and the Boardwalk
Varnikai Botanical-Zoological Reserve protects a forest-and-bog complex in the southern part of Trakai Historical National Park. The reserve covers about 611 ha, of which about 450 ha are forests and about 207 ha are Ilgelis bog. VLE notes Varnikai bogs among important natural places in Trakai Historical National Park, established in 1991 and covering 8,200 ha.
One of the trail's most memorable elements is an almost 1.5 km boardwalk across Ilgelis bog, built from moisture-resistant aspen wood. Here you see sphagnum, dark water patches, reeds, aquatic plants, and forest edges.
The bog contains four relic lakes: Baluošas, Bevardis, Piliškių, and Ilgelis, considered remnants of one large lake. They are closed lakes fed by surrounding bogs, with excess water draining to Bernardinai, or Luka, Lake.
Old Oakwood and Species Diversity
The Varnikai area includes an approximately 200-year-old oakwood, Natura 2000 habitats, and high plant diversity. This shows that the trail is not only recreational but part of protected nature.
For visitors, the rule is simple: stay on the trail, do not shortcut through the bog, do not pick protected plants, and leave wildlife undisturbed.
Infrastructure
Trail-start infrastructure includes visitor parking solutions, wooden gates, and rest facilities. Along the route are shelters, viewpoints, and rest stops.
After rain, the boardwalk may be slippery, so city shoes are not ideal. With children, the route is interesting, but pay attention near water holes and narrower boards.
Varnikai and a Trakai Route
Varnikai works best as the calm nature part of a Trakai day. You can start here in the morning and later go to the castle, or retreat to the forest after the tourist centre.
Trakai is busy on weekends and in summer, so arrive at Varnikai earlier for easier parking and a quieter walk.
