What stands on the western shore of Lake Ilgis
No single monument defines the shrine. Wooden and metal crosses, small devotional structures, Marian images, rosaries, and flowers cover the grassy slope and water's edge. Some crosses and a pale Marian statue stand directly in the shallows.
A modern chapel with a tall green roof, often compared to a bishop's mitre, rises above the shore. It is not an old village church: the present building emerged from a recent pilgrimage tradition and was solemnly blessed on 30 June 2014.
The site is sometimes called a small Hill of Crosses, but its character is different. Crosses descend to and into the lake, while reeds, changing water level, and the wooded opposite shore form the landscape. Never rearrange offerings or wade out to the structures.
What the testimony actually says
According to local testimony, two young relatives, usually named Juozas Kriauklys and Albina Skvarčinskaitė, rode a motorcycle near Lake Ilgis at night and saw a bright light. On approaching, they reportedly saw a young woman in pale clothing by a decayed post in the water.
The young people told relatives and a priest about the experience, and believers identified the figure with the Virgin Mary. People began praying on the shore, erecting crosses, and bringing images and flowers. This is the history of testimony and the religious tradition it created, not a verified supernatural event.
The Catholic Church has not officially authenticated the reported Kvintiškės apparition. The site participates in Imbradas parish life, hosts Mass, and draws pilgrims, but active devotion is not the same as formal recognition of an apparition.
Why the sources disagree on the date
Current Zarasai municipal and local church material usually gives the night of 30 June 1967. A state document lists Kvintiškės under 1 July 1967, which may describe the same night after midnight.
Other published accounts place the event on the night of 30 June to 1 July 1968 or 1 to 2 July 1968. The discrepancy has not been conclusively resolved, so this page does not select one date as though every source agreed.
The most accurate concise wording is that the night of 30 June 1967 is most often given, although some accounts state 1968. Acknowledging the discrepancy does not diminish the site's meaning for believers; it separates documentary uncertainty from faith.
From Soviet interference to the 2014 chapel
Local and church accounts say Soviet authorities removed crosses, monitored or obstructed access, and dispersed pilgrims. This is an important part of community memory, but individual dramatic episodes should not be expanded without archival documentation.
After independence, the site was developed more systematically. Official local sources say chapel construction took about fifteen years and depended mainly on donations. Bishop emeritus Jonas Kauneckas of Panevėžys blessed it in 2014.
In 2026, the municipality replaced a decayed wayside shrine that marks the route from Imbradas toward Kamša and reported repairs to the chapel steps. This shows active local care, but it is not an accessibility audit and does not guarantee a step-free route.
Feast day, access, and respectful conduct
The Panevėžys Diocese lists 30 June as the main Kvintiškės chapel feast. Evening Mass, a procession, or special transport may be arranged that day, but one year's event notice is not a permanent timetable. Check the Imbradas parish or diocesan channels.
No permanent chapel opening hours, toilets, drinking water, or regular public transport could be confirmed in 2026. The final road may be gravel, while steps and natural lakeshore ground become slippery after rain, snow, or frost. No verified step-free approach was found.
Believers may give religious meaning to the lake water and objects at the site, but healing or drinking properties are unverified. Do not drink untreated lake water, leave plastic or candle debris, disturb offerings, or interrupt people praying quietly.
