The Marcinkonys centre is both an exhibition and a trip-planning base, not a museum for the entire park
The visitor centre stands at 61 Miškininkų Street in Marcinkonys. Its official WGS coordinates, 54.061529 and 24.398346, mark the centre site. It is one of the national park's two visitor centres, so do not confuse it with the centre in Merkinė or treat it as the only gateway into a very large protected landscape.
Its particular value is its position beside routes through the Dainava Forest. A brief visit can cover the exhibition and route advice, while a longer stop works as preparation for a walk, cycle ride, guided outing, or pre-booked educational activity.
The building is easy to recognise by its russet-red facade panels, glazed entrance, large visitor-centre emblem, and pine trees reflected in the windows. A tactile orientation map near the entrance and adapted facilities make clear that this is a staffed public building rather than an outdoor information board.
Surrounded by Forests explains the Dainava landscape through wildlife and human lives
The official exhibition title can be translated as Surrounded by Forests: Nature and People of the Dainava Forest. It presents woodland not as a green backdrop but as a network of habitats and as an environment that has shaped everyday life in local villages.
Inside, the rhythm of real-looking tree trunks is combined with stylised figures of elk, lynx, wild boar, fox, and forest birds. This layered design works well for families: a child can begin by identifying animals, while an adult reads about species and their roles in the wider forest system.
The exhibition helps visitors notice more outdoors. On Zackagiris, sand, lichen-rich pine woods, wet sections, and the Grūda valley become distinct habitats rather than a random change of scenery. Marcinkonys homesteads and tree-hive beekeeping sites add the second half of the story: people within the forest.
Choose a specific Zackagiris circuit, map, and realistic return time before setting out
Zackagiris Nature Trail begins at the visitor centre. The full circuit is 13.8 kilometres, with shorter 7- and 10.5-kilometre options. Deep sand, heat in open areas, and occasional wet ground can alter walking speed substantially, so choose the exact version at the centre rather than improvising at a later junction.
Staff provide information about walking trails, cycle routes, sights, accommodation, food, and tastings of Dzūkian dishes. Visitors can also ask about guides and walk leaders and buy maps, publications, and park-related souvenirs. Any paid personal service should be arranged in advance.
If you spend about an hour in the exhibition, the Marcinkonys Ethnographic Homestead and a shorter Zackagiris loop fit naturally into the same day. The complete 13.8-kilometre trail is already the day's main activity, so do not add a Čepkeliai tour without allowing for its separate drive, booking time, and walk.
Čepkeliai visits are booked here, but the educational trail starts at a different location
The Marcinkonys centre handles advance bookings for tours of the Čepkeliai educational trail, but the centre coordinates are not the wetland trailhead. The educational trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and begins at 54.021751, 24.427337, so select the correct point in your navigation app.
From 1 March to 1 August, individuals and groups may enter the reserve's educational trail for learning purposes only when accompanied by a Directorate specialist. The published escorted times are 10:00, 13:00, and 15:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. Book by calling +370 672 46388 or emailing info@dzukijosparkas.lt.
From 1 August to 1 March, self-guided visits are permitted during daylight only and visitors must remain on the marked educational trail. This is not permission to wander freely across Čepkeliai Reserve. Always confirm seasonal conditions, group charges, and availability because nature protection or trail conditions can require changes.
The 2026 tickets and bookable services are separate products, not one universal admission fee
On 19 July 2026, the official centre page listed self-guided exhibition admission at EUR 2 for an adult and EUR 1 for school pupils, students, disabled visitors, and older people; children under six entered free. The same page offered a EUR 5 adult day ticket covering both visitor centres in Merkinė and Marcinkonys, the Ethnographic Homestead, and the Tree-Hive Beekeeping Apiary.
The official tariff in its 20 May 2025 edition separately lists a EUR 2 self-guided ticket for the two visitor centres. A specialist-led exhibition presentation costs another EUR 2 per person plus admission. It is normally supplied for a group of ten; a smaller party must pay the service minimum calculated for ten people.
In that tariff, an accompanied visit to the Čepkeliai educational trail costs EUR 6 per person and also carries the ten-person service minimum for a smaller party. Ticket combinations, concessions, group minimums, and educational rates can change, so use these figures as planning guidance and recheck the official pages before payment.
A phone call resolves the published-hours discrepancy, while the building provides adapted access
On 19 July 2026, two official websites showed different Tuesday-Friday hours. The Directorate's centre page listed 08:00-17:00 with lunch from 12:00 to 12:45, whereas Saugoma.lt listed 09:00-18:00 from May through September. Both listed Saturday opening from 09:00 to 16:00. The centre closes on a published set of public and family holidays, and closes one hour earlier on their eves.
Because of that discrepancy, and because seasonal and holiday hours can change, call +370 672 46388 before travelling specifically for the exhibition. Monday and Sunday do not appear as ordinary opening days in the published schedule, even though outdoor routes remain accessible independently.
There is a car park beside the centre. From it, visitors can reach a lift adapted for people with physical disabilities, which serves the exhibition and conference room, and an adapted toilet is available inside. If you need help transferring, opening doors, or operating the lift, notify staff before arrival.
