How to recognise Varniai Church of St Alexander
The Church of St Alexander stands at Vytauto g. 10/1 in Varniai and is easy to distinguish from Varniai Cathedral. It is a yellow-painted wooden church with a red-orange roof, a tall central tower, white-trimmed windows, and expressive red-brick gates. A pale stone wall encloses the churchyard, so the ensemble is best read from the street approach.
Look not only at the façade but also at the relationship between the gates, wall, and church. The building sits within the town yet retains the character of a separate older sanctuary through its materials and single-towered form. As it is an active parish, enter only when the doors are open and worship is not disturbed.
The Vytautas foundation story and the 1764 rebuilding
The first church here is traditionally connected with Vytautas, who gave it the name of St Alexander, his baptismal name. The core of the present story is linked with 1764, when the church was rebuilt on a larger scale, and 1804, when it was restored. The chronology presents the building as a long-changing place of Varniai's religious memory rather than a one-time construction.
Varniai can refer both to the present town and to its Senieji Varniai historical layer. This church is associated with Senieji Varniai, while Varniai Cathedral is a separate landmark elsewhere in town.
A return to parish life
After the Samogitian bishop moved away from Varniai in 1864, this church became the centre of the Senieji Varniai parish. In 1949 the building was turned into a warehouse, later used as a shop, and returned to worship in 1991. The change of uses is part of the visit: the calm exterior conceals a complicated twentieth-century history.
The Church of St Alexander in Varniai is a cultural-heritage route object (KVR code 1682). Its heritage status does not mean that the interior is always open or that a permanent exhibition operates here.
Architecture, Mass, and feast days
It is a rectangular wooden single-towered church where late-Baroque and vernacular architectural features meet. Outside, this can be read in the restrained main volume, the vertical tower accent, and the colour relationship between wood, roof, and brickwork. Interior viewing requires parish permission or a visit timed with worship.
Weekday Mass is held at 18:00, the Feast of St Alexander is on February 24, and the Feast of St Roch is on August 18. These are useful planning anchors, but active parish schedules change, so check the current time before setting out.
