Lake Lūkstas near Varniai

Lūkstas is a lake in Telšiai District, about 2 km southwest of Varniai. VLE gives its area as 1000.9 ha, its north-south length as 6.1 km, maximum width as 3.5 km, and surface altitude as 154.6 m. It is one of the largest lakes in Samogitia.

The lake belongs to Varniai Regional Park and is one of its clearest water-landscape centres. Because of its size, it feels not like a small recreation pond but like a broad Samogitian lake with varied shores, winds, wetlands, and cultural layers.

Glacial origin, depth, and the Venta basin

VLE states that Lūkstas is glacial in origin: its basin formed in the place of a former ice block. The maximum depth is 7 m, the average depth 3.6 m, the catchment area 76.3 sq km, and the shoreline 19.1 km. The Sietuva from Paršežeris, Gardena, Domantas, Ungurys, and several other streams flow in, while the Varnelė flows out.

VLE emphasizes that Lūkstas belongs to the Venta basin and is the largest lake in that basin; its water-throughflow is 77 percent. The northwestern shore is relatively steep, while the northeastern and southern shores are swampy. This variety matters for visiting: not every shore is good for swimming, and wetland zones require staying on paths and avoiding pollution of sensitive habitats.

Fish and lake seasonality

VLE states that bream, pike, eel, and crucian carp live in Lūkstas, so the lake is also important for recreational fishing when current rules are followed. On the northwestern shore the shallow littoral is sandy, while elsewhere the bottom is covered with aquatic vegetation.

The lake has a clear seasonal rhythm: according to VLE, Lūkstas freezes in December and clears of ice in early April. The water level varies on average by about 0.7 m, so the appearance and accessibility of the shore depend on season and weather.

The amber-bearing Palūkstis shore

Lūkstas is often mentioned because of amber. VLE states that amber has been found in glacial deposits, the so-called Palūkstis amber-bearing shore. The origin of this lake amber was studied in 2004 by scientists of the Institute of Geology and Geography: V. Baltrūnas, Bronislovas Karmaza, Dainius Kulbickas, and Violeta Pukelytė, so the amber theme here has a scientific basis.

Saugoma.lt officially presents the Lūkstas Amber Trail on the northern shore: it is 1 km long and has 2 information boards, 1 direction sign, and 5 information posts. The amber theme is not a promise that every visitor will find something; it is a distinctive quality of the place, where sand, reeds, and shallows explain why the lake is so strongly associated with amber.

Ancient settlements, sacred site, and the Sietuva kūlgrinda

VLE writes that in the northeast of Lūkstas lies Debesnas Bog, and in it, on Vaišnorius Island, the ancient settlement of Varniai. Near the southwestern shore are the Mažasis Palūkstis Stone Age settlement and Mažasis Palūkstis sacred site, so the shore preserves both Stone Age and old-belief traces.

Between Lūkstas and Paršežeris is the Sietuva kūlgrinda. This reminds visitors that the lake surroundings are not only a recreation zone: water bodies, wetlands, and land routes formed a system of living, defence, and movement over a long period. On the northwestern shore is the Varniai recreation site, where the international festival Bliuzo naktys takes place every year.
