The competent authority's official name for the site is Lake Metelys Bathing Area. Municipal material also calls it Metelys Bathing Area or Lake Metelys Public Beach. It is the public swimming place at Ežero g. 47A, not the whole lake and not the separate beach by the regional park visitor centre.
The coordinate 54.304882, 23.748657 marks the exact mapped visitor access. The Institute of Hygiene gives its water-sampling point as 54.3051, 23.7464, roughly 150 metres west in the lake. The points differ because one is for arrival and the other for water monitoring.
Follow signs from Ežero Street when you arrive. Events can temporarily close the beach or alter local traffic, as previous festival notices demonstrate, so check the municipality's current announcements before a summer-weekend visit.
Roughly 200 metres of natural sandy beach
The 2024 Institute of Hygiene profile describes a natural shore, a sandy beach surface, and a length of about 200 metres. Its official panoramas show a broad lawn, sandy waterline, pine grove, and long low pier, so the site is not a tiny enclosed woodland cove.

The profile describes average bathing-water depth as up to 2 metres and maximum depth as 3 metres. Those figures do not mean that the bottom slopes evenly everywhere: check the depth before entering and keep children within reach.

Metelys is one of the large lakes of Meteliai Regional Park. Together with Lakes Dusia and Obelija, it forms a mosaic of open water, wet shores, forests, and agricultural landscapes that is worth experiencing beyond the beach's small sandy strip.
Follow beach and park signs while relaxing: leave the car in the designated place, do not drive onto grass or the shore, do not light fires outside prepared areas, and do not remove stones, plants, or animals. A protected area is not just a backdrop for a one-off picnic; quiet, tidy visits help preserve the shore for others.
If you want more than swimming, extend the same outing to the park visitor centre, Meteliai Observation Tower, or Prelomčiškė Hillfort. The bathing area then becomes one stop in a day rather than a reason to drive across sensitive shorelines.
Planned improvements are not today's guaranteed facilities
In 2026, Lazdijai District Municipality announced plans to reconstruct a pier, add lit paths and a public toilet, expand a playground, install outdoor exercise equipment, renew a volleyball court, and create recreation zones at one popular Lake Metelys shore. The article does not identify that site by address, so not every item can automatically be assigned to this bathing area.
During works, approaches may be rerouted, fenced, or noisier. Check municipal notices and signs before travelling; do not enter a construction area or judge today's beach condition only from older photographs.
The work is planned for completion by 31 August 2029. Until then, distinguish the current outdoor toilet, playground, and other facilities documented in 2024 from future infrastructure. Bring water, a towel, sun protection, and a bag for your own rubbish.
