A church between two lakes
Meteliai Church of the Transfiguration is in Meteliai village at Ežero g. 6. This is an important identity detail: the spot is not the parish office at Ežero g. 8. Coordinates 54.3023633, 23.7444676 identify the church itself.
The church stands between Lake Metelys and Lake Dusia. Its setting immediately explains why Meteliai matters not only as a parish centre but also as a village in a landscape between lakes.

From a seventeenth-century foundation to a masonry sanctuary
The history of Meteliai parish reaches back to 1619, when the foundation of the first church is associated with Povilas Sapiega. The earlier sanctuary was burned by the Russian army in 1655, and a wooden church stood here after 1711.
A lightning-caused fire in 1807 led to the construction of the present masonry building. It rose in 1819-1822 and was consecrated in 1825. These dates describe the building sequence of the present church, not the whole history of the Meteliai religious community.
Later care included work on the towers, foundations, and roof in 1885, an organ made by J. Garalevičius in 1909, and the removal of three bells in 1914. These are separate maintenance and loss episodes, not one single reconstruction.
A Classicist facade with Neo-Baroque touches
The church is broadly Classicist, while Neo-Baroque features appear on the facade. Its rectangular main volume ends in a narrower lower apse, with two square front towers and a central pediment at the entrance side.
From public space, the symmetrical facade reads clearly: towers, central window, entrance, and horizontal cornice rhythms. The side wall reveals the masonry and shows how the two-towered front belongs to a longer single-nave space.
A masonry wall surrounds the churchyard, which also contains a bell tower and a one-storey rectory. Together they form a sacred-landscape composition; do not enter closed areas or touch graves and memorial elements while viewing it.
Parish life, Mass, and restored heritage
Vilkaviškis Diocese lists Sunday services at 12:00, Saturday Mass at 10:00, and weekday services at 09:00; on weekdays in May, June, and October it lists services at 18:00. Check the schedule with the parish before travelling: this is a living community timetable, not a museum opening schedule.
The church was restored in 2004, and art monuments are preserved inside. Visitors can encounter more than a facade, including the continuity of interior and liturgical use, if the doors are open and the visit does not disturb worship.
The parish's indulgence days are associated with 23 April and 6 August. A feast day may mean more people, a different liturgy, or a busy churchyard, so plan extended viewing and photography respectfully.
Planning a route between Dusia and Metelys
Allow 20-40 minutes for the exterior. Start with the facade, towers, and central pediment, then view the wall and bell tower from public space and notice the relationship to the lakeside village. Before entering, make sure the timing is appropriate.
Meteliai Church combines naturally with the regional park visitor centre, observation tower, Lakes Dusia and Metelys, or Prelomčiškė Hillfort. These are separate stops, so allow realistic driving, parking, and walking time between them.
