Dusia
A large southern Lithuanian lake
Dusia is one of Lithuania's largest lakes. VLE gives an area of 2,334 ha, making it the country's third-largest lake; it is 8.4 km long, up to 4.2 km wide, up to 32.4 m deep, with an average depth of 15.4 m and a shoreline of 21.6 km. VLE notes that Dusia occupies the western part of a dead-ice basin, the same basin that formed Lakes Metelys and Obelija.
For travellers Dusia is memorable first for scale. From the shore you see a broad water horizon, while the big sky and low shores can make the lake feel almost lagoon-like.
Lake Dusia in Meteliai Regional Park
Lake Dusia lies in Meteliai Regional Park, which protects the landscape of the great southern Lithuanian lakes Dusia, Metelys, and Obelija. This means the lake is important not only for recreation but also for protected habitats.
In the regional-park context, Saugoma.lt emphasizes the lake landscape, recreation infrastructure, and natural values. Visitors should follow rules for camping, fires, parking, and water use.
Shallows, shores, and birds
Dusia's hydrographic landscape includes broad sandy shallows, 50-200 m wide, occupying about 12 percent of the lake area, and open shores. These places attract recreation but are also sensitive for birds, fish, and shoreline habitats. VLE notes that Dusia belongs to the very slow water-exchange lake group: its water renews about every 15 years.
In spring and autumn Dusia can be interesting for birdwatchers. VLE lists 18 fish species in the lake, including vendace, smelt, eel, pike, and bream. Birds are best watched from prepared places with binoculars; trying to approach usually only scares them away.
Prelomčiškė and Sutrė surroundings
VLE mentions Prelomčiškė Hillfort and the Sutrė, or Crosses, sacred site in the surroundings of Dusia. This gives the lake a historical and cultural layer often missed by visitors focused only on beaches.
For a longer trip, combine Dusia's shores with Meteliai Regional Park Observation Tower, the Prelomčiškė area, and other Dzūkija lake routes.
Where to stop
The most practical approach is through Meteliai and regional-park information. Shores include recreation and camping places, but in season it is worth arriving earlier or choosing a quieter time.
Because Dusia is large, one stop does not show the whole lake. A tower, beach, quieter shore, and cultural object together give a much fuller impression.
How to visit responsibly
Dusia's beauty depends on open shores, clean water, and reedbeds. Use designated places, do not drive into shoreline meadows, and do not light fires where they are prohibited.
On windy days the lake can feel much rougher than smaller inland lakes. If boating or swimming, assess wind, waves, and distances carefully.
