Butrimonys Fountain, Butrimonys Glass Fountain, Butrimonių fontanas
Water turns inside the cylinder instead of rising in open jets
The fountain begins with a broad low circular platform clad in dark grey stone tiles. A smooth transparent cylinder stands on top. Water at the surface forms a broad funnel, narrowing downward into a twisting vertical vortex core.
The attraction is commonly called a glass fountain, and the municipality uses that term, but museum and technical descriptions identify the transparent vessel as an acrylic cylinder. The distinction matters: visitors see glass-like clarity, but this is not a conventional glass tank.
Integrated lights colour the water blue, green, and other hues. Blue hour is more revealing than complete darkness because the vortex already glows while the square's paths, benches, trees, and surrounding houses remain legible.
In 2019, the fountain became the emotional centre of the renewed square
The fountain opened in 2019 with the renewed central square. The municipality's 2019 activity report gives EUR 661,507 for renewal of the square and installation of the fountain together. This figure must not be presented as the price of the cylinder or water machinery alone.
The reconstruction created zones for events, active recreation, planting, rest, and a central focal point. The fountain therefore works best not as an isolated technical exhibit but as a place to meet and linger in the square.
Butrimonys Museum notes everyday town services near the fountain. This guide does not fix names or opening hours for cafés and shops because they change. Plan food and toilet access separately for a weekend journey.
Roads and trade created the triangle, not the fountain
Butrimonys square formed where roads toward Vilnius, Alytus, and Punia met. Its trading function explains the unusual triangular plan and why the church does not occupy the centre. The surrounding built fabric retains the character of early twentieth-century merchants' and craftspeople's houses.
The Cultural Heritage Register protects the whole historic centre of Butrimonys, including its street network, square plan, and building pattern. The 2019 fountain is a new layer within a protected urban setting, not an old component of the registered heritage itself.
The contemporary interpretation of the triangle connects the destinies of Lithuanians, Tatars, and Jews who lived here. It is a meaningful present-day reading, but these communities did not share identical histories. In particular, the murder of the town's Jews in the Holocaust cannot be replaced by a simple harmonious three-colour symbol.
Operation depends on season, weather, and maintenance
This is an outdoor water installation, so it normally remains off in the cold season and may stop temporarily in warmer months for maintenance, faults, water quality, or events. On 27 July 2026, the official municipality page did not publish a reliable daily start time or lighting programme.
The square is public and there is no separate fountain ticket. Free access does not guarantee an operating vortex on every visit. If seeing the illuminated fountain is the purpose of the journey, ask Butrimonys Eldership before setting out.
Paths around the fountain are mostly level and paved and benches are provided, but no complete official audit of gradients, surface gaps, accessible toilets, or reserved spaces was found. Do not climb the cylinder platform, lift children onto it, or touch the water machinery.
The map point is in the square, not in a car park
Coordinates 54.5010019, 24.2526210 mark the fountain itself in the pedestrian part of Butrimonys triangular square. They are not a lawful stopping place for a car. Park only in marked spaces outside the pedestrian zone and never drive onto the square paths.
On 27 July 2026, the exact Google Maps entry with Place ID ChIJW-8KxF9N50YR5XdvUmy0FnU showed 4.7/5 and about 1,600 reviews. The count is approximate because the public entry grows continuously and may display it in rounded form.
Allow 25-50 minutes for the vortex and square plan. Waiting for dusk requires a longer break, but illumination depends on the fountain actually operating, not merely on the astronomical sunset.
