A green hill at the edge of Vilnius Old Town
Bastėjos Hill is a small outdoor viewpoint in the heart of Vilnius Old Town. From the grassy slope, red roofs, church towers and streets descending through the trees create a short escape from the stone lanes into a modest green space.
It is not a large structure or a museum. Its identity comes from the relief, paths, mature trees, bench and historic masonry nearby, while the panorama changes with the season and foliage.
Why it is called Bastėjos Hill
The name comes from the nearby Vilnius defensive-wall bastion. The hill and bastion therefore form one Old Town walking environment, but they have different functions.
The adjacent bastion is a historic defensive structure with a museum exhibition. Its ticket, timetable and interior access help plan a bastion visit, but they are not visiting conditions for Bastėjos Hill.
The Vilnius panorama from the slope
From the higher part of the hill, the compact Old Town appears in layers: red roofs and greenery in front, with individual church towers and the wider city silhouette farther away. Trees break up the view, making it feel more like a living park lookout than an open terrace.
Sunset light can make the Old Town roofs especially attractive. The actual view still depends on clouds, leaves and the precise stopping point, so a named tower or distant building may not be visible in every season.
Access, paths and the bastion museum
The map point 54.677382, 25.293880 marks the hill panorama itself. Bokšto g. 20 is a fair arrival landmark beside the bastion because the hill has no separately published house number.
Paths and steps on the slope can be uneven or slippery after rain, so assess access on site. Public transport and paid parking at O. Šimaitės g. 1 serve the nearby bastion, not guaranteed hill facilities.
Adding Bastėjos Hill to a day in Vilnius
A short stop can include the top of the hill, a seat beside the path and time for the panorama. For a longer route, add the adjacent bastion, Subačius Viewpoint, the Missionary Church direction and the Old Town streets.
The hill has no separate tourist schedule or ticket. Respect the planting and residential surroundings, stay on sensible paths near the slope and do not transfer museum rules to the park.
