Čiurlionis House, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis House in Vilnius
A seventeen-square-metre room
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis moved to Vilnius in autumn 1907 and settled in a historic house on what was then St Andrew Street, now Savičiaus Street. From November 1907 until June 1908 he rented a room of only 17 square metres. Its modest scale gives a tangible sense of the conditions in which the artist tried to establish himself in the city.
Not all of the original furnishings survive, so the house is not a frozen domestic reconstruction. The memorial relies on the documented building and a specific period of residence, while its interpretive displays weave Čiurlionis's letters, music, art, and the cultural life of Vilnius into a coherent story.
A Vilnius period that changed the artist's path
In Vilnius, Čiurlionis became involved in the Lithuanian Art Society, participated in Lithuanian cultural events, conducted choirs, and met Sofija Kymantaitė. The city was where his musical and visual work encountered the people driving the Lithuanian cultural movement.
His brief residence on Savičiaus Street matters not for luxury but for its creative intensity. It reveals an artist simultaneously composing, seeking income, organising cultural life, and building personal relationships. That human perspective complements the paintings displayed in major museum galleries.
A living cultural centre, not only a memorial
Opened on 24 September 1995, the Čiurlionis House operates as an intimate cultural venue. Its small rooms host concerts, exhibitions, conversations, presentations, and educational programmes. The programme changes regularly, so two visits may offer very different experiences.
Some events and virtual-reality experiences require separate registration, a timed session, or an additional ticket. They should not be confused with an ordinary visit to the memorial rooms. If one particular concert or experience is your reason for coming, reserve it under the organiser's published conditions.
Planning a visit on Savičiaus Street
The M. K. Čiurlionis House stands on a narrow Old Town street close to Town Hall Square. Arriving on foot and combining it with other Old Town museums is easiest. The memorial is compact, but it rewards an unhurried visit with time to listen to music and notice the fabric of the historic house.
