River, reserve, and reservoir

Baltoji Ančia is not a single fenced visitor attraction. For travellers it has three related layers: a Nemunas tributary, a hydrographic reserve, and a large reservoir created by damming the river.

VLE gives the river length as 29.2 km and the basin as 820 sq. km, most of it in Lithuania and part in Poland. Before travelling, decide whether you want the river valley, the reserve, a water route, or a rest place by the reservoir.

Baltoji Ančia Hydrographic Reserve

Baltoji Ančia Hydrographic Reserve was established in 2009 and covers 175 ha. It protects a natural stretch of river valley, the small Pastovis and Bliūdelis lakes, and bird breeding sites.

Reserve status means the attractive shores are not only recreational space. Follow protected-area logic: do not erode banks, disturb birds, create informal campsites, or plan paddling without checking restrictions.

Baltoji Ančia Reservoir

In 1955 Baltoji Ančia was dammed, forming the Baltoji Ančia Reservoir. VLE gives its area as 249.5 ha, length 15.5 km, depth up to 12.3 m, and shoreline about 40 km.

The reservoir is more practical for waterside recreation than the river itself, but the long, winding shoreline means access, steepness, and suitable resting places vary widely. Choose a specific access point rather than only the general name.

Paddling and seasons

If you plan to paddle, check the water level, route start and finish, road access, and reserve regime. Baltoji Ančia is not an urban promenade with one obvious route; the trip depends on the section chosen.

In spring the river can have more water, in summer the reservoir shores and water recreation are most convenient, and in autumn quieter shores suit nature observation. After heavy rain, banks may be wet and slippery.

How to visit responsibly

Protect natural banks, do not drive to the water in prohibited places, do not leave litter, and avoid noise near bird breeding areas. This is especially important in reserve sections.

Baltoji Ančia combines well with Lazdijai-region lakes, Lake Dusia, Veisiejai, or a broader southern Lithuania route toward Merkinė.
