A distinct building at the eastern end of Nemunas Island
Žalgiris Arena stands at 50 Karaliaus Mindaugo Avenue in the eastern section of Nemunas Island. The Google Maps coordinates 54.8904569, 23.9145678 mark the large arena building itself, so they are classified as a site point rather than one universal entrance. The correct door depends on the space named on the ticket and the organiser's plan for that event.
The arena is not another name for all of Nemunas Island. The island is an approximately 25 ha public park that also contains Science Island, an aquatic centre, outdoor sports courts, and walking paths. The park is accessible without an arena ticket, while the main arena room opens through an event, a pre-booked tour, or another arranged activity.
The building's scale and transparent elevations are easiest to read from the water side. Karaliaus Mindaugo Avenue and the city centre lie across the channel, and several pedestrian and vehicle bridges connect the island. These approaches distribute a large audience in different directions, but the bridges and forecourt still become densely pedestrianised after a sold-out evening.
From a Kalniečiai Park proposal to the 2011 opening
Kaunas began seeking a new arena in 1998, when the municipality commissioned Eugenijus Miliūnas to design a sports palace in Kalniečiai Park. Funding stopped and that location was abandoned; after prolonged debate, Nemunas Island was selected in 2004. The present building is not a reconstruction of Kaunas Sports Hall but a new venue that assumed the city's largest matches and concerts.
The contractor Vėtrūna was chosen by competition in August 2008, and a ceremonial capsule marked the start of construction on the island on September 26. On March 18, 2010, Kaunas City Council named the entertainment and sports palace under construction Žalgiris. The chronology matters: the building received its name while construction was still under way.
The formal opening took place on August 18, 2011. After the ceremony, Lithuania's men's national basketball team defeated the reigning European champions Spain in the first game, and the final stage of EuroBasket 2011 established the building as an international competition venue. Later milestones include the 2018 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B and the 2023 EuroLeague Final Four.
Transparent high-tech architecture without a decorative mask
AUTC identifies Eugenijus Miliūnas and Aurimas Ramanauskas as the arena's architects and gives 2006 on the object record. Its analysis relates the building to minimalism, slick-tech, high-tech, and approaches that celebrate the expression of materials. That helps explain why the arena reads less like a sealed and decorated stadium than an exposed technical organism.
Long blue-green glass elevations reveal reinforced-concrete floor plates, steel bracing, stairs, and the movement of visitors. A darker mesh screens the upper technical level, while external staircases become independent elements of the composition. AUTC highlights metal and reinforced concrete as principal materials and notes the deliberate use of bare concrete and metal inside.
The architects did not disguise the fact that a large event venue is a working machine. Exposed structure and services, the industrial character of the Aleksotas bank, and reflections from the Nemunas create a relationship specific to this site. In daylight the glazing partly dissolves the volume; on an event evening, illuminated concourses reveal the movement of people within.
Capacity changes with the court, stage, and event plan
The arena's official information gives an overall floor area of approximately 40,000 square metres. A historical technical summary lists capacities of 12,300 to 15,415 for sporting events and 2,574 to 20,000 for concerts. These figures do not describe one permanent seat count: the stalls, stage, curtains, technical zones, and safety clearances are configured separately for each production.
For basketball, permanent sectors and temporary floor seats surround the court. A concert stage may close an entire end of the seating bowl, while a 360-degree centre stage opens different sectors. The floor can become an ice rink, and in 2012 a motorsport show brought 1,200 tonnes of earth, clay, and peat into the hall. Choose a ticket from the plan for the particular event, not from a generic arena diagram.
The largest attendance highlighted on the current official site is 20,517 for an SEL concert on December 5, 2015. That is a record for one historical arrangement, not a promise that every concert releases that many tickets. The arena's current presentation also reports more than 900,000 visits and an average of 303 events per season across the main and smaller rooms.
Tickets, door times, tours, and venue rules
Žalgiris Arena has neither one daily public opening schedule nor a universal admission ticket. Doors usually open 1-2 hours before an event, but the precise time, duration, age policy, interval, ticket agent, and price appear on that event's own page. The contact section's weekday office hours of 8:00-17:00 are administrative hours, not a tourist opening schedule for the main hall.
A pre-arranged group tour is the principal way to see the arena without attending a match or concert. In July 2026, the official offer listed a 45-60 minute tour for up to 25 people at EUR 170, available in Lithuanian, English, or Russian. Tours normally do not run on EuroLeague or other major-event days, and access to the main room, training areas, and VIP spaces depends on work in progress, so reconfirm the price and date directly with the arena.
Rules effective from May 1, 2025 require a valid ticket and acceptance of a security inspection. In July 2026, the cloakroom charge was EUR 2.50 for one outer garment and a storage locker cost EUR 4, but check the current official rules before visiting. Keep the ticket until the event ends, and speak to security before leaving temporarily because a previously scanned ticket does not automatically permit re-entry.
Arrival in 2026, parking, and accessibility
The arena recommends public transport for major events. The walk from Gedimino g. and Studentų skveras stops on Kęstučio Street or Griunvaldo g. on Vytauto Avenue normally takes 5-10 minutes. Special buses marked ŽA run after some large events, but their operation is announced in the event listing and should not be assumed after every programme.
In July 2026, the S. Daukantas pedestrian bridge was closed for a major repair planned through autumn 2027. The municipality directed pedestrians to alternative bridges by the Carmelite church and at A. Mickevičiaus, Maironio, and I. Kanto streets. Check the newest notice before travelling because the usual shortest route from Laisvės Avenue and the construction boundary may change.
Event parking beside the arena must be bought in advance; the official July 2026 range was a fixed EUR 3-20 depending on the event. On non-event days, the first three hours were free only through the Parkavimas Mieste app with a linked card and vehicle registration number. Designated parking for visitors with mobility disabilities is on level zero, adapted entrances serve the building, and lifts connect the floors; confirm the correct door and companion-ticket arrangement for your sector.
