Science Island: Lithuania's first science centre on Nemunas Island

Science Island is one of Kaunas' newest culture and education sites. The official centre presents it as the first science and innovation popularization centre in Lithuania. It is located on Nemunas Island, so the experience begins before entering the building: the city centre, river, walking paths, Žalgiris Arena, and large public space are all nearby.

This is not a traditional museum with objects behind glass. The long-term exhibition includes about 140 interactive exhibits, a modern planetarium, and 4 STEAM laboratories. The site's history is also interesting: during foundation excavation, an old landfill was discovered underground, and that experience became one exhibition theme about consumption and waste.

SMAR Architecture Studio building with a 27 m disk

The building arose after an international architecture competition with 145 participating teams. The winning proposal was Sun never sets for science by the Spanish-Australian architecture office SMAR Architecture Studio, with Gintautas Natkevičius' team as partners in Kaunas.

The most visible accent is a 27 m-diameter disk weighing about 250 tonnes and held by only one beam. Because of this form, the building itself becomes an exhibit. The visual identity of Science Island, inspired by this project, was created by the design studio Praktika duo.

The Human. Nature. Machine exhibition

The main long-term exhibition Human. Nature. Machine is the largest of its kind in Lithuania and contains as many as 140 interactive exhibits. It is organized into seven themes: Human Body and Health, Food, Nature and Environment, Waste and Pollution, Energy, Transport, and Communication; for preschool children there is an additional puzzle piece connecting all themes.

Many exhibits encourage visitors to make decisions, and the answers are sent by light signal to the central exhibit, the Island Heart or Icentre, symbolizing how individual choices create a shared environment. This kind of exhibition works best unhurriedly. It suits the whole family, but it is not only a children's play zone; adult visitors can also see how complex themes are translated into experiments.

Nemunas Island context

Science Island changes the Nemunas Island route. Previously, many people associated this space primarily with the arena, walks, and events; now it has a permanent education centre suitable for all seasons.

That makes it easy to combine a visit with the city centre, Laisvės alėja, the island, and the riverbanks. If travelling with children, such a route lets you alternate indoor activities with time outdoors.

Tickets, timing, and pace

At the time of research, the official Science Island page listed opening hours Tuesday-Friday 9:00-18:00 and Saturday-Sunday 10:00-19:00, with Monday closed. Exhibition tickets were 17 EUR for adults, 12 EUR for children, and 50 EUR for families; the planetarium (8 and 6 EUR) and STEAM laboratories were ticketed separately, with no single ticket for all activities. Entry works by time slot and without re-entry, so check the official page before travelling and buy tickets online in advance when possible.

Allow at least 1.5 hours; the exhibition itself recommends 2-3 hours. With children and a wish to try everything, 2-3 hours is more realistic because interactive exhibits create queues and naturally slow the pace. The spaces are accessible to all, with lifts, accessible toilets, and baby rooms.
