Kaunas City stated an area of 21.1 hectares in its 2016 reconstruction description. This is not a pocket square serving a single group of buildings but a broad green space. Its principal route connects the directions of P. Lukšio Street and Savanorių Avenue, while secondary links run toward S. Žukausko Street. The visual centre is an artificial water body officially treated as one pond, although its winding shape broadens into several lobes. A circuit of the pond links the water, fountain, and principal paths
Before reconstruction, the official technical design documented a single artificial pond and only a partial waterside path laid with paving slabs on an inadequate base. Old asphalt was cracked, while informal desire lines showed that the formal path network did not match the ways people actually moved through the park. The project therefore placed new asphalt links along the most important visitor routes.
By 2018, the municipality confirmed the completed work: new routes for walkers, cyclists, and skaters, a pond bank reinforced with stones, and a new lighting system. Several interconnected loops make it possible to take a short circuit around the water or extend the walk through wooded sections and toward the sports and children's areas.
An illuminated fountain was installed in the pond, but municipal fountains operate seasonally and depend on weather, maintenance, and city decisions. The Ąžuolynas Library's Kaunas Dates and Facts chronology states that Kalniečiai Park was founded in 1980. That date fits the construction of the Kalniečiai residential district between 1974 and 1985 and the neighbouring service and shopping complex built in 1978-1980. The library presents the park as part of a planned residential environment.
The Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia article about Kalniečiai says that the park with its pond was founded in 1994. The sources reviewed do not explain whether 1994 denotes later legal recognition, redesign, another project stage, or a different administrative action. The accurate approach is therefore to report both documented dates without inventing a reconciliation.
The visitor experience today was shaped most clearly by the 2016-2018 renewal. In 2016, the city announced reconstruction of the 21.1-hectare area with an estimated cost of EUR 1.1 million. In August 2018, it invited residents to the reopened park. The year 2018 is consequently the completion date of that major renewal, not the park's original foundation date.
Children's, sports, and dog areas were deliberately separated
The 2016 technical design specified separate playgrounds for ages 2-5 and 5-12, a standard 28 by 15 metre basketball court, a beach-volleyball area, three outdoor table-tennis tables, exercise equipment, and an asphalt zone for skating and BMX cycling. The 2018 opening notice confirms that sports, children's play, and extreme-sports spaces were built, although the condition and exact selection of equipment may have changed since then.

Outside the enclosure, general Kaunas animal-control rules still apply, so bring a lead and remove waste. Water birds at the pond and nearby children's areas are additional reasons not to let a dog run uncontrolled.
Shelters, benches, and tables for board games create quieter places to read or picnic away from the active zones. The design also allocated three sites for portable toilets, but mobile toilets, seasonal drinking-water points, and commercial services are not guaranteed around the clock. Plan food, water, and toilet needs in advance, especially when visiting with children.
Principal asphalt routes improve access, but the entire park is not uniformly adapted
The technical design applied accessibility requirements to new paths and activity areas, while all three portable-toilet sites were planned with an adapted cubicle. Renewed asphalt routes are generally more suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs than natural ground, but no current access audit covering the complete park was found. Gradients, damaged surfaces, or temporary obstructions may occur on individual links.
There is no admission ticket or controlled gate. The Google Maps listing stated 24-hour access on the date checked, and lighting was installed along paths and around active zones. Even so, the pond banks, lawns, and wooded sections are not equally visible at night, so daylight is the more practical choice for a first exploratory circuit.
Residential streets and commercial properties surround the park, so do not assume that every nearby car park provides free spaces for park visitors. Read signs, observe private-car-park rules, and never block access to apartment buildings. Arriving by public transport or bicycle allows you to enter at one side and leave from another without returning to a single gate.
Kalniečiai Park is separate from Dainava and Draugystė parks
The park takes its name from the residential district, and its clearest landmark is the large winding pond near the P. Lukšio Street side. Dainava Park and Draugystė Park are separate Kaunas green spaces farther southeast. The city's 2018 report distinguishes them explicitly: Dainava Park had reopened one week earlier, while reconstruction was still in progress at Draugystė Park.
For a first visit, begin at the pond and complete one circuit. Then extend the route according to your purpose: families can continue to the age-specific playgrounds, active visitors can connect several sports areas, and those seeking quiet can choose routes through the more mature stands of trees. This reveals the park as a system of contrasting spaces rather than simply a place to photograph the fountain.
Outdoor cinema, exercise sessions, concerts, and neighbourhood activities have taken place here since the reopening, but there is no fixed event calendar. On an event day, a lawn, sports ground, or section of path may be occupied. Check current Kaunas City event information and notices at the park before making a special journey.
