Jurbarkas Monument to Vytautas the Great
A Jurbarkas memory marker from 1930
The monument was erected in 1930, when Lithuania marked the 500th anniversary of Vytautas the Great's death. Jurbarkas Regional Museum gives the specific date of 8 September. Associated with his planned but unrealised coronation, that date is still observed here with civic events.
The commission belongs to a broad interwar Lithuanian movement in which towns created markers of statehood history in public space. Jurbarkas is distinctive because a professional monumental artist living locally made the work rather than a manufacturer of serial memorials.
Vincas Grybas's architectural composition
Vincas Grybas settled and began working in Jurbarkas in 1928. He ranks among Lithuania's leading monumental sculptors of the early 20th century. Nazi occupation forces murdered him with other Jurbarkas residents in 1941, adding a further layer of memory to his work in the townscape.
The pedestal has two stages: a rectangular cubic lower block and a more complex octagonal upper stage with clipped corners. A bust of Vytautas crowns the composition. Look beyond the face to the pedestal's proportions and the relationship between heraldic decoration and the ruler's image.
Why the monument required restoration
VLE mentions restoration in 1989, while the municipality's 2022 account cites work in 1990 and 2006. The one-year discrepancy may reflect start and completion dates; the important point is that the memorial has required repeated care.
Before the latest project, microflora, moisture, and salts had damaged the surface, while cracks, detached decorative render, and losses appeared on the pedestal. The 2022 work included research, cleaning, removal of unsuitable cement repairs, crack treatment, reconstruction of losses, and a protective water-repellent treatment.
How to inspect the monument
The monument stands in public space on Vytauto Didžiojo Street and is free to view at any suitable time. The pin marks the object rather than reserved parking; follow local parking signs.
Begin several metres away to see the whole vertical composition, then approach the pedestal decoration. Do not climb the base or lean bicycles against it. Ceremonies on 8 September and state holidays can make the small space busier.
