An old museum name within a new Professors' House story
Visitors still search for the Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas Museum, but since 2025 the former memorial apartment has operated within the wider Professors' House managed by Vilnius, UNESCO City of Literature. The writer's authentic space remains at Tauro g. 10-3, although admission and programmes may now cover more than one biography.
The rooms contain personal objects, documents, books, and art. A dedicated tour combines a talk on Mykolaitis-Putinas's biography and major works with the apartment itself, making it particularly rewarding for readers of In the Shadow of Altars or Lithuanian twentieth-century poetry.
A modern apartment building from 1938
Architect Mojżesz Cholem designed the four-storey house for engineer Dawid Strugacz in 1938. Spacious four-room apartments and functional planning reflected interwar Vilnius modernisation. The building matters not only for famous names but as evidence of modern architecture and changing residential infrastructure.
When the Faculty of Humanities of Vytautas Magnus University moved to Vilnius in 1940, academics and cultural figures settled here. Residents included Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius, Balys Sruoga, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, Kazys Boruta, Mykolas Biržiška, and Jadvyga Čiurlionytė. Today's interpretation treats the house as a network of connected lives.
