A garden founded for the 1928 independence jubilee
In 1928, while Lithuania marked the first decade of municipal self-government, Vilkaviškis decided to establish a city garden. Its formal name dedicated it to the tenth anniversary of Lithuanian independence. From the outset it was therefore both a green space and a memorial to the young state's civic institutions.
The interwar garden offered tennis and dance courts, an outdoor swimming pool and a café. These features show that it was conceived for active public leisure, not merely as an ornamental square. Historical accounts also describe an extensive selection of trees and decorative shrubs.
A green witness to a city devastated by war
Nazi German aircraft bombed Vilkaviškis on June 22, 1941, and around 90 per cent of the city's buildings were destroyed during the war. The city garden's setting and its interwar facilities suffered with the historic centre.
Visitors should not expect an unchanged 1928 composition. Today's park is the product of several periods. Mature trees recall the older garden, while paths, equipment and planting compositions reflect later restoration and contemporary public use.
Renewed paths, planting and family spaces
A major twenty-first-century renewal reshaped the park. Paths now curve between denser tree canopy and open lawn, with a children's play zone, small stage, seating and illuminated swings that become a visual focus after dusk. Older trees mingle with newer ornamental shrubs and flowerbeds.
Its character changes with the seasons: planting in spring and summer, mature foliage in autumn, and occasional community decoration turning it into a winter garden around the holidays. Those winter installations vary each year and are not a permanent exhibition.
How to visit and what to combine it with
The city garden is an open, free public space without museum hours or a ticket office. Allow roughly half an hour for a quiet loop or up to an hour and more with children, photography or a longer rest. During events, some areas may be occupied, so check the programme in advance.
Combine the garden with the cathedral and the riverside paths of central Vilkaviškis. Protect flowerbeds, do not climb planted mounds, follow local signs when walking a dog, and cycle at a speed safe for pedestrians.
