Twenty tiny rooms beneath the pavement
Launched on 19 June 2020, the project consists of 20 miniature 'rooms' beneath toughened glass. They are distributed beside twenty buildings on Lietuvininkų Street, so this page's coordinate is a representative route point rather than a single exhibit.
The idea develops a childhood game in which a tiny arrangement was hidden in the ground beneath a shard of glass. In Šilutė it becomes a way to read the town: looking down reveals an interior or everyday scene connected to the neighbouring house.
The period interpreted by the miniatures
The scenes evoke everyday Šilutė life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Lithuania Minor's traditions of trade, craft and urban domestic life shaped the town. Small objects and activities tell that story more intimately than a monumental statue could.
The initiative involved Šilutė Art School, Šilutės baldai and the municipality, with Andrius Sirtautas leading the creative team. The secrets are therefore contemporary interpretations of history, not surviving authentic underground rooms.
Renewal and stories voiced by children
The installations were renewed in 2023. QR codes now open audio stories voiced by children, adding a listening layer to the visual study of each miniature.
Bring a charged phone and mobile data, and use headphones on the public street. Check QR operation and the official website on site because technical links can change over time.
Walking the route without harming it
The pavement route is free and has no ticket-office hours, but it is clearest in daylight. Rain, snow, dirt and glare can obscure the fine detail. Spending several minutes at each scene makes the full walk about an hour long.
Do not jump on the glass, place bicycles on it or block other pedestrians. These installations sit on a working street, so watch traffic at crossings and keep children together between exhibits.
