Šilutė F. Bajoraitis Public Library, Šilutė Public Library
The library on Tilžės Street
The central library is at Tilžės Street 10, 55.3443409, 21.4794758. It formally opened in this reconstructed building on 26 May 2006. It is a public institution, but reading rooms and events should be visited only during published hours.
The building stands in the historic Žibai part of town. Its light street facade has three storeys, a red-tiled roof and balconies. The architecture remains visible from the public pavement when the library is closed.
Inside are specialised areas for reading, exhibitions, presentations by artists and writers, volunteering, informal groups and education.
From 269 books to a district network
The library was founded on 1 August 1945. Its original collection had 269 books and it registered 20 readers by the end of that year. Collections, branches, events and mobile services subsequently grew.
In 1995 it was named after Fridrichas Bajoraitis. In 1906 he founded the Lithuanian travelling library, the first mobile library in Lithuania Minor, linking the modern institution directly with regional reading history.
Official 2025 statistics cover a 23-branch network, thousands of readers, events, educational sessions and digitised heritage documents. Figures change, but they show an active cultural system rather than a memorial room.
What visitors can do
Check the official events calendar before visiting. It includes literary talks, concerts, art and document exhibitions, children's education, digital-skills activity and local-history projects.
For a specific book or local-history document, check the catalogue or contact staff first. A public display and a stored collection are different: some material must be requested and conditions may apply.
Library registration, event tickets, group visits and photography can have separate rules. Confirm current conditions in the official event description.
A short cultural route
Allow at least 30 minutes, or up to 90 minutes for an exhibition or event. From Tilžės Street it is easy to continue to the old market square, Secrets of Šilutė and Hugo Scheu Manor.
Keep quiet in study areas, silence phones and do not touch display objects unless they are interactive. Arrange educational visits for children's groups in advance.
Opening hours and events change, so this page does not replace the official website. General library entry and a ticketed special event are not necessarily the same.
