Sartininkai Church of St George: a 1787 wooden church, detached belfry and historic churchyard

Sartininkai Church of St George is a modest wooden folk-architecture sanctuary built in 1787. The cruciform church with its roof turret is joined by a detached wooden belfry, fieldstone wall, ten Stations of the Cross and an 1886 stone cross. It is an active parish, so interior visits should fit around worship.

Sartininkai church

A small wooden sanctuary near the Sartė

The church stands at Tylos g. 2 in Sartininkai, about 14 km north of Pagėgiai. Maps use LT-73245, while the diocesan parish contact uses a 73014 postal variant.

This is an active parish church, so its doors are not always open. The most reliable option is to view the exterior and churchyard in daylight, and enter during worship or with the parish's permission.

The 1787 church and parish development

Land was assigned in 1786 and the present wooden church was built in 1787. Sartininkai first belonged to Vainutas and later Žygaičiai; a parish school is recorded in 1805 and an independent parish from 1912.

Those historical ties do not make Sartininkai and Vainutas one destination. Their buildings, addresses and map points differ.

Folk architecture and churchyard

The folk-style church has a cruciform plan, a small roof turret and three altars. A fieldstone wall encloses the coherent complex with its detached wooden belfry.

The church and churchyard retain ten Stations of the Cross, nineteenth-century paintings, a folk Crucifix, two 1928 bells and a five-metre stone relief cross erected in 1886.

Mass and responsible visiting

Sunday Mass is held at 10:30, other services are by arrangement, and confession is available 30 minutes before Mass. Recheck the schedule before travelling.

There are no regular tourist hours or an admission price. Arrange interior access, respect worship and the cemetery setting, and do not assume parking or step-free access.
