Pašilė Church: an understated classical facade
Pašilė St. Barbara Church stands at Pašilės g. 16 in southern Ukmergė. It is a compact sanctuary recognisable from the outside by its symmetrical pale facade, Doric pilasters, rectangular openings, and a small belfry on the sloping roof. This is not a large towered cathedral: its scale and restrained ornament are the place's defining qualities.
Different views of the churchyard reveal the facade from several angles: look for the small belfry, pilasters, and brick rhythm without blocking the active parish's entrance.
1789 or 1791: two dates for the church's beginning
The church's history uses two beginning dates, 1789 and 1791. They mark the building's origins in different ways, so both dates are relevant to visitors.
The foundation is associated with Count Mykolas Kosakovskis. Pašilė gradually became part of Ukmergė: the settlement was incorporated into the town in 1966, although the church site remains an identifiable historical layer.
Facade and interior details
The church is a compact rectangular volume with three naves, a vestibule, and a three-slope roof. Pilasters, an entablature frieze with a triglyph motif, rectangular openings, and arched niches set the classical rhythm of the facade. These elements can be read from the public approach, so the building rewards a slower look rather than a single photograph.
The former facade inscription DIEVO APVEIZDOS was still visible as an outline in 2007. Inside are a high altar with a Serliana motif and a painting of the Crucifixion, but they can be seen only when the doors are open and no service is under way.
When the sanctuary became a cinema
The building has an unusual twentieth-century layer: in 1964-1965 the church was adapted as a cinema. This is often the most surprising part of the story, but it does not mean that a separate cinema attraction operates in Pašilė today. The building is again used as a Catholic church.
During 1989-1994, as the building was restored and returned to the faithful, its purpose shifted back to religious life. A visit therefore brings together an eighteenth-century sanctuary, a Soviet-period cinema hall, and a present-day parish church.
Visiting at Pašilės g. 16
Because this is an active parish site, the interior may be closed outside services. No fixed tourist timetable or ticket price is published. To enter, the safest plan is a service time confirmed in advance or a prior enquiry to the parish.
Pašilė is about 4 km from the centre of Ukmergė. Allow 30-45 minutes for the exterior and a short history stop; during services behave as in a place of worship, avoid disturbing the community, and photograph only when permitted.
