This page covers the Ožkų Ragas shore structure at 55.3869091, 21.0744870 north of Preila. VLE describes Ožkų Ragas as a cape on the eastern Curonian Spit, separated from Pervalka Cape by Karvaičiai Bay. It is not Preila pier or the southern Pervalka tower.
VLE describes the cape itself as about 150 metres long and up to 375 metres wide. Its dune plain is uneven in places and supports grass, lichens, birches, and alders; beneath the foredune lies the former last site of Karvaičiai village, associated with the birthplace of Liudvikas Rėza. The tower is only one point within this wider landscape.
An observation point on a migration route
Ožkų Ragas is one of six waterbird observation points arranged along the Curonian Lagoon shore. A Lithuanian Ornithological Society tower competition also names an Ožkų Ragas team, confirming the practical purpose of the site.
Large migrant movements cross the Curonian Spit in spring and autumn. Lagoon shallows, bays, and reeds provide feeding and resting habitat, but species and flock size depend on date, wind, water level, and patience.
Watching without disturbance
Bring binoculars, keep voices low, and remain on the path and platform. Do not play bird-call recordings, enter reeds, or allow dogs to chase birds. Low spring reeds often provide the clearest view.
The structure assists observation; it is not a guaranteed rare-species display point. Take notes and photographs from a distance, and be particularly careful around nesting habitat during the breeding season.
Access and safety
The coordinate marks the tower, not parking. Walk or cycle from Preila on permitted routes after leaving a vehicle legally in the village. Protect fragile dune and lagoon vegetation and never cross barriers.
Wooden steps and decking may be slippery after rain, frost, or algae growth. Do not climb if the structure is closed, damaged, or moving unusually. Avoid the exposed lagoon shore during lightning, storms, ice, dense fog, or darkness.
