A contemporary, not archaeological, place
Merkinė Pyramid is not an ancient Egyptian or Baltic archaeological monument. It is a contemporary spiritual space in Česukai village near Merkinė, which the official site presents as a place of spiritual knowledge and wellness.
The tone therefore has to be precise: it is fair to describe the objects, visiting rules, and official story, but spiritual experiences should not be presented as verified medical or historical fact.
The dome and triangular pyramid
The main visual object is a 12.5 m high geodesic dome made from aluminium structure and tempered glass. Inside it stands a triangular pyramid with an equilateral-triangle base and concentric circles.
This architecture creates an unusual contrast in a Dzūkija landscape of forests and clearings. Even a sceptical visitor can see it as an interesting contemporary experiment in sacred space, not just as a tourist object.
Three crosses and the sequence of the space
The official objects section mentions three crosses, a memorial hill, and other places in the space. A visit usually follows a sequence: arrival, respectful movement through the territory, pauses by the crosses and dome, silence or personal prayer.
This matters when photographing and moving through the territory. Merkinė Pyramid is open to visitors, but many people come not for entertainment but for personal spiritual practice.
The official story
The official history section links the beginning of the place with Povilas Žėkas's experience on August 20, 1990. Later, that experience became the basis for a space created with supporters and like-minded people.
It is best to present this story as the official tradition of the place and a body of testimonies. It is not the same kind of data as an archaeological find, so readers should clearly distinguish verifiable facts from faith experience.
Visiting etiquette and route
During research, the official visiting page listed daily visiting from 09:00 to 20:00 and free entry, but check the official website before travelling.
On arrival, follow posted instructions, do not disturb others, do not photograph people without consent, and leave the space tidy. Merkinė Pyramid combines well with Merkinė Hillfort, Merkinė centre, the Nemunas and Merkys confluence, and Dzūkija National Park routes.
