Names and variants

Pušų gojelis

Pušų gojelis above the Nemunas

Merkinė Observation Tower stands on the right bank of the Nemunas in Dzūkija National Park. Because its construction resembles a group of pine trunks, Saugoma.lt also gives the tower's nickname: Pušų gojelis, little pine grove.

It is not Lithuania's tallest tower, but its location is powerful. Merkinė is one of Dzūkija's key landscape nodes, where the Nemunas, Merkys, town history, and national park nature come together in one view.

Height and view

Saugoma.lt gives the tower height as 26 m. From it you see the ribbon of the Nemunas, Pastraujo Island, Merkinė bridge, town roofs, and above them the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the spire of the regional museum.

Saugoma.lt stresses that the size, colour, and arrangement of the tower supports create something like a group of trees: it does not dominate the setting but dissolves into the pinewood. Irregular viewing platforms recall pine crowns, and the stairs connecting them feel like a path between tree trunks; because the steps are gentle, visitors of different ages can climb it.

This view differs from the panorama at Merkinė Hillfort. The hillfort is more closely tied to the historical memory of confluence and defence, while the tower gives a wider look at the Nemunas valley and Merkinė as part of the landscape.

Dzūkija National Park context

Saugoma.lt presents Dzūkija National Park as Lithuania's largest protected area, and VLE specifies its size as 58,519 ha, the largest in the country, noting that Merkinė and Marcinkonys are the two largest settlements in the park. The Merkinė tower belongs to this broader natural context: pinewoods, river valleys, islands, sandy terraces, and old town roads form the base of the Dzūkija landscape.

The tower should therefore be understood not as a standalone structure but as an introduction to the landscape of southern Lithuania. From above it is easier to see how Merkinė lives between rivers and forests.

Merkinė Observation Tower and Merkinė Hillfort

If you have little time, visit both the tower and Merkinė Hillfort. The two sites are close but give different perspectives: the tower shows the Nemunas valley and town panorama, while the hillfort reveals the historical axis of the place.

A good route is to start with the hillfort and then walk or drive to the tower, or the reverse. This makes Merkinė feel less like a single stop and more like a set of views and stories.

When to climb

The best time is a clear day or sunset, when light brings out the bends of the Nemunas and the silhouette of Merkinė. In the morning, mist often gathers above the valley, while summer foliage creates a deep green horizon.

After rain and in winter the stairs may be slippery, and the wind at the top can be stronger than below. Climb calmly, because the tower's quality is not speed but the chance to stop and read the landscape.

How to visit responsibly

Follow the tower rules, do not climb over railings, and do not overload the viewing platform if many visitors are present. Observation towers look simple, but their safety depends on basic discipline.

At ground level, protect the forest setting: do not litter, do not create new paths, and do not rush onto slopes just for a better photo. The best view here is already planned from the official viewpoint.
