Dusetos Gallery
A gallery in a small town
Dusetos Art Gallery stands out because it creates professional art activity in a small Aukštaitija town. The official gallery story links its beginnings with stronger art teaching from 1972 at Dusetos Kazimieras Būga School and the local creative environment.
The gallery opened on 6 July 1995 in eldership premises. Romualdas Pučekas, Eugenijus Raugas, and Alvydas Stauskas are named as initiators, and the first exhibition showed works by Dusetos-region artists.
Gathering Dusetos artists
The gallery's mission is to bring together artists and photographers born, living, or working in Dusetos. It is not a random exhibition room but a long-term cultural centre where regional creators have a permanent place of visibility.
Over several decades the gallery has organised about 300 exhibitions in its own spaces and more than 100 exhibitions outside Dusetos. These numbers show that a small-town gallery can function as an active professional cultural institution.
Selonia miniatures and the horse theme
One traditional gallery direction is the Selonia-region miniature exhibitions, involving artists from Lithuania and Latvia. This is an important regional cultural link, opening Dusetos not only as part of Zarasai District but as part of the broader Selonian cultural field.
Another recognisable theme is the horse in art and photography, connected with the Sartai horse-racing tradition. Dusetos stands on the southern shore of Lake Sartai by the Šventoji River in Sartai Regional Park, and famous Sartai races have been held on the lake ice since the early nineteenth century. As a result, in the Dusetos gallery art often converses with local identity, sport, and regional symbols.
New building and recognition
The new gallery-building stage was marked by a 2012 exhibition. Later the gallery gained wider visibility: visitors to ArtVilnius'17 chose it as a gallery, and ArtVilnius'19 visitors singled out Remigijus Kriukas.
The official text cautiously calls it perhaps the first professional small-town art gallery in Lithuania. That caution is worth preserving: it signals distinctiveness without claiming absolute primacy.
Opening hours
During research, the official Dusetos Culture Centre page listed gallery hours as Wednesday-Friday 9:00-17:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-17:00, closed Monday-Tuesday and on public holidays.
No stable permanent ticket price was found on the official contacts page during research. Check gallery announcements before travelling, because openings, events, and educational activities may have separate arrangements.
