Sartai Regional Park Visitor Centre: an exhibition about Lake Sartai, the Selonians, and Dusetos horse-racing tradition

The map point identifies one building in Dusetos, not the whole park

Sartai Regional Park Visitor Centre stands at 5 Vytauto Street in Dusetos, Zarasai District. Coordinates 55.747289, 25.841163 come from Saugoma's official directions point and mark the centre building. They are not the centre of Lake Sartai, the middle of the park, the observation tower, or a guaranteed parking bay.

The centre is a useful first stop because visitors can understand the park's structure, ask for route information, and then choose a lake shore, tower, nature trail, or cultural site. An exhibition ticket does not automatically include a private guide or transport around the regional park.

Steps lead to the front door, but the officially adapted wheelchair entrance is at the rear. If a particular drop-off point, assistance, or space for a coach is essential, call +370 645 56344 before arrival rather than judging access only from a photograph of the front facade.

The exhibition is organised around branching Lake Sartai and its landscape

The permanent exhibition is titled Unique Lake Sartai. It interprets more than one body of water: a complex intersection of glacial channels, hills surrounding the lake, forests, wetlands, species, and the cultural setting of Dusetos all form part of the regional-park story.

The Aukštaitija Protected Areas Directorate describes Sartai as the Lithuanian lake with the longest shoreline, approximately 79 km, and counts 29 lakes in the park landscape. In the exhibition, these figures become a map rather than a record alone. Sartai's branching form explains why road distances between viewpoints and opposite shores are longer than a glance across the water suggests.

A film covers the lake's formation and the park emblem, the great crested grebe. Natural sounds, images of fish, old boats, oars, and a blue setting suggestive of rippling water connect separate facts into a coherent lake-district narrative.

A pedal-powered lake outline and active map reward participation

One of the centre's most specific installations is a table fitted with bicycle pedals. Pedalling generates electricity that lights the outline of Lake Sartai within the tabletop. Children and adults can see the profusion of bays and branches while physically activating the display.

Another interactive table serves as a park map: touching active zones brings information about a selected visitor site onto a screen. Its real value is route planning, allowing visitors to compare the lake, Baršėnai tower, Dusetos sights, nature trails, and the Antazavė direction before driving away.

A separate video display introduces the Dusetos horse-racing tradition. Official centre texts describe its age at different levels of precision, from more than a century to roughly two centuries in an educational narrative. It is safest to read the display as an introduction to a living local tradition rather than as a copy of one definitive document recording the first race.

In the Selonian room the old boat is a listening place and the clothing is reconstructed

One room interprets the Selonians and their way of life. It contains a genuinely old timber boat fitted with audio equipment. Visitors can sit inside, listen to sutartinės and legends connected with the Selonian theme, and watch a projected image that suggests movement across a lake.

Nearby male and female costumes are reconstructions. That word matters: the display offers a modern visual interpretation of clothing associated with the old Baltic tribe, not perfectly preserved garments removed from an archaeological burial. Similarly, the audio provides cultural context without proving that every song heard here was collected in Dusetos itself.

The room remains connected to the lake theme. Boat, sound, and projected motion recall waterways as routes for people and memory, not just natural features. The centre consequently rewards visitors interested in the cultural layers of north-eastern Lithuania as well as its biology.

Programmes differ substantially in duration, meeting point, and guiding format

The directorate page updated in June 2026 describes Sartai - Lithuania's Lake Orchid as a 40-minute educational session in the exhibition for children and adults. Mysterious Dusetos Races lasts about 1.5 hours, connects horse-racing history with a search through town, and requires a smartphone or camera.

A Small Town with a Grand History is a roughly 1.5-2 hour route around Dusetos in which a phone and map replace a live guide. It is not the same as a staff-led tour. The longer 3-4 hour Shelter of the Hills programme visits multiple places, including the 33-metre tower, Velikuškiai II Hillfort, Bradesiai Oak, Antazavė, and Dusetos.

Secrets of Antazavė Forest begins in Antazavė, covers about 7 km, and takes 3-4 hours. Not every activity offered by the centre therefore begins at the door of 5 Vytauto Street or falls within an exhibition ticket. When booking, confirm the meeting place, participant ages, group size, duration, equipment, and final charge.

The current 2026 hours, tickets, and access have precise conditions

The Saugoma record updated on 18 July 2026 listed 1 April-30 September hours as Tuesday-Friday 09:00-18:00 and Saturday 08:45-16:30, with lunch 13:00-13:45. From 1 October to 31 March, it listed Tuesday-Friday 08:00-17:00 with lunch 12:00-12:30, and Saturday 10:00-15:00 without a lunch closure.

Hours are shortened by one hour on the day before a public holiday, and the centre closes on public holidays. The seasonal timetable can still change for an event, staff fieldwork, or a new season, so check the newest centre notice or call before a long journey.

The directorate tariff updated in April 2026 listed visitor-centre exhibition admission at €2. A one-hour centre tour cost €4 per person in Lithuanian or €6 in a foreign language, subject to a minimum ten-person charge. Educational sessions were listed at €4, €5 with directorate materials, or €8 in a foreign language per person, also with group conditions. Confirm the current rate and exceptions when booking.

An asphalt road reaches the centre. The official accessibility description records a rear ramp and an adapted toilet. This supports access to the principal exhibition, but does not mean that every outdoor tour, hillfort, tower, or Antazavė Forest walk has equivalent accessibility.
