Balžis Lake Beach I, Balžio (Bildžių) ežero paplūdimys I, Balžis I Beach
Balžis Beach I is on Lake Balžis, not Lake Balsys
Balžis Beach I is on Lake Balžis, also called Lake Bildžiai in official Vilnius documents. The exact Grinda map point is 54.792485, 25.432985, on the Balžio Street side of the wooded northeastern Vilnius landscape. The name is easy to confuse with Lake Balsys by the Green Lakes, but these are different lakes and different bathing sites.
There is another important boundary between Balžis I and Balžis II beaches. Both are on the same lake, but this assigned site is the first beach, whose official description specifically highlights an access ramp, an adapted changing cabin, and a pier leading into the water. Select the specific Balžis I beach listing in navigation rather than searching only for the lake.
This is one of the separately maintained beaches on the Balžis shore, so check infrastructure and bathing information under the Beach I name. Water tests, lifeguard hours, and seasonal services can change; consult current official notices before swimming.
The beach has more than a strip of sand
Grinda lists swimming and sunbathing piers, public toilets, changing cabins, an adapted cabin, bicycle stands, and a lost-and-found box at Balžis Beach I. Its barbecue area has grills, tables, and benches, with some facilities adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. This is a city bathing beach with everyday visitor infrastructure, not an undeveloped lakeshore.
The pier is for reaching the water and sunbathing, but its decking, rails, and connections are outdoor equipment affected by rain, ice, and repairs. If you see barrier tape, a closure, or a warning, use another access point and do not rely on an older photograph.
The lake shores are wooded, so the beach combines open sandy areas with shade beneath trees. Sand, grass, and the timber ramp can be slippery after rain. Enter the water only in the marked bathing area, and keep children close to the piers.
The ramp provides specific access, not a promise of a fully step-free route
Grinda describes Balžis Beach I as especially adapted for safe bathing by everyone. Its facilities include an access ramp into the water, a pier for visitors with reduced mobility, an adapted changing cabin, and adapted barbecue tables. These are identified physical features, not a general promise that every beach surface is level.
The sources do not describe every route from the car park to the water as a continuous step-free path. Visitors with mobility requirements should confirm which entrance is open, whether the ramp is under repair, and what the sand and natural surfaces are like before travelling.
Accessible facilities are shared spaces, so do not block the ramp, the front of the pier, or adapted tables with belongings. Stay inside the buoy-marked bathing area and follow lifeguard instructions; adapted equipment does not remove the risks of open water.
The bathing season has defined rules, while water conditions change
The Vilnius public-beach standard defines the bathing season as 1 June to 15 September unless the municipality sets another period. It also states that lifeguards should be on duty daily at beach rescue posts from 8 am to 8 pm during the summer beach period, with duty potentially extended to 10 pm from 1 June to 31 July when the air temperature is above 20 degrees Celsius. Always check the day's signs and flags before swimming.
Grinda says that water and sand are regularly tested at the beaches it maintains. The Vilnius environmental monitoring page includes bathing waters at Lake Balžis, or Lake Bildžiai, in the city's monitoring. This is not permission to swim in every condition: stay out after heavy rain, when warning signs appear, or whenever bathing is prohibited.
Do not jump from the pier because near-shore depth, the lake bed, and underwater obstacles may be different from what they look like above the surface. Keep children within reach and use a life jacket when boating. Leave piers and return to shore during thunder or strong wind.
How to reach Balžis Beach I
Grinda lists the Balžio bus stop as the nearest public-transport stop. The beach can be reached by bus, bicycle, or car; its official description gives about 19 kilometres and roughly 32 minutes from central Vilnius as an orientation, but travel time depends on traffic. A paid car park is listed, so do not leave a vehicle on grass, a forest path, or an access road.
A walking path runs around the Balžis beaches and suits a longer stroll. This beach page is not a nature-trail map, however: the shore may include sand, grass, or forest ground, and conditions change by season.
An hour is enough for swimming and changing, but allow 2-4 hours for a comfortable visit. Arrive early on hot weekends, bring drinking water, and leave the barbecue area clean. The official description does not list a separate entrance ticket, while parking is paid.
