Žirmūnai River Neris swimming site, Žirmūnų maudykla
An official Neris swimming site in Žirmūnai Park
Žirmūnai Beach is a public city beach at 9 Neries Street, on the right bank of the River Neris beside Žirmūnai Park. Institute of Hygiene documents identify it as the Žirmūnai River Neris swimming site. Along an approximately 150-metre bathing stretch, sand gives way to lawn, with mature trees and a more natural band of riverside vegetation around it.
The coordinates 54.723541, 25.312586 mark the officially monitored swimming site rather than an assumed vehicle entrance. It occupies part of the 15.13-hectare Žirmūnai Park, where the Neris forms the main landscape axis and trees cover most of the opposite bank.
On 15 July 2026, its exact Google Maps card, place ID ChIJHfdVSs-W3UYR57fE4pSYv5s, showed 4.5/5. This is a dated snapshot of user opinion and can change.
Beach facilities, sport, and accessibility
The main recreation area has changing cabins, toilets, and showers. Nearby are beach-volleyball and basketball courts, outdoor exercise equipment, a punching bag, children's playground, and a barbecue area with fixed grills, tables, and benches. A short pier and a seasonal passenger-boat landing stand beside the river.
The operator lists an accessible changing cabin and a more convenient descent path. Special bathing wheelchairs and lifeguard assistance into the water have been offered to visitors with limited mobility, but confirm the availability of specific equipment and help with the lifeguards on the day of your visit.
Sand, lawn, and shade from trees provide different places to settle, but this is not a fully urbanised pool complex. The condition or availability of seasonal toilets, showers, drinking fountain, loungers, and other equipment can change, so follow current operator notices on site.
The 2026 season, lifeguards, and water tests
Žirmūnai is an officially monitored swimming site administered by UAB Grinda. For 2026, the operator announced that Vilnius beach season began on 1 June and that lifeguards would be on duty daily from 08:00 to 20:00 during summer. The official bathing season normally continues to 15 September, but duty hours and services may change because of weather, water conditions, or an operator decision.
On 8 July 2026, Grinda reported that the latest Žirmūnai Beach samples failed requirements, warning signs had been installed, and visitors were temporarily advised not to swim. When this page was reviewed on 15 July 2026, that remained the latest official notice verified on the operator's website, and no later clearance to swim could be confirmed. Stay out of the water until a newer official compliant result is issued and on-site signs and flags permit swimming.
Samples are tested for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, with regular monitoring during the season and extra tests after pollution incidents. The site's long-term classification was excellent in 2018-2022 and good in 2023-2024, but classification does not establish safety on a specific day. Heavy rain, runoff, heat, and high visitor numbers can cause short-term deterioration, so an old good sample never cancels a newer warning.
River current, children, and conduct by the water
The Neris is a flowing river, so its current, depth, bed, and water level are not constant. Swim only inside the buoyed area, do not enter the navigation channel, and keep clear of the passenger landing and approaching boats. Current and propellers can endanger even a strong swimmer.
Keep young children continuously within an adult's arm's reach beside the water, even if they can swim or wear a buoyancy aid. Do not enter while intoxicated, wade in gradually after overheating, do not jump from the pier, and never rely on inflatable toys for safety. In an emergency, alert a lifeguard and call 112.
The Institute of Hygiene bathing-site profile states that pets may not be brought onto the beach. Light fires only in the fixed grills provided, do not obstruct lifeguards, and always obey that day's restrictions, flags, and information boards.
Getting there and practical planning
Valakampių tiltas is the nearest public-transport stop named by the operator. The beach is also convenient to reach along Neries Street and park paths on foot, by bicycle, or by scooter, while passenger boats may call during summer. Routes, schedules, and fares change, so check them on the day of travel.
Žirmūnai Beach has no dedicated car park. It is about 6 kilometres by road from central Vilnius, but kerbside spaces are limited and local traffic controls or temporary changes may apply, making public transport or a bicycle more practical. Never park on the lawn, a path, or emergency-service access.
There is no admission charge, but a free outdoor site does not have one year-round service timetable. Lifeguard cover, toilets, showers, access equipment, and the boat stop are seasonal or subject to change. Before leaving, check the latest water notice, operator information, weather, and signs at the beach.
