Amsterdam School Museum: Lithuania's only Amsterdam School building and a restored interwar apartment

One apartment explains an extraordinary Kaunas facade

The museum does not occupy the entire apartment building. It is in flat 6 on the third floor, reached through the original stairwell. LIMIS states that architect Jokūbas Peras designed the house in 1928 for businessmen Mozė Posvianskis and Girša Klisas. It is the only building in Lithuania so consistently associated with the Amsterdam School that emerged in the Netherlands.

Study the Vytauto Avenue facade before the tour. Corners and wall planes resist a strict rectangular box, windows are divided into smaller segments, and sculpture marks the entrance. Amsterdam School ideas mingle with Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences, but the result is not a simple imported copy. It records choices made by a local architect and ambitious clients in interwar Kaunas.

The museum's 136-square-metre apartment comprises five rooms, two balconies, and a terrace facing the Žaliakalnis slopes. The plan supports a story not only about a formal sitting room but also about privacy, hospitality, and household organisation in an affluent provisional-capital home.

A restored interior that visitors can experience

Karolis Banys and Petras Gaidamavičius opened the museum in early 2023, after establishing the Art Deco Museum in another Kaunas apartment. Restoration sought to retain old doors, windows, floors, and uncovered colour layers. Period furniture, lighting, tableware, and domestic objects complete what did not survive.

This is not a display experienced only through glass. During the experiential tour, visitors may try selected furniture, listen to music, examine materials, and hear about sustainable restoration. Deep wall colours and wood grain make a particularly strong contrast with the familiar image of white, austere modernism.

The interpretation also shows the building's uncomfortable later biography. In the Soviet period, rooms were divided into communal flats, so surviving images of those alterations are compared with the restored state. One room appeared in HBO's Chernobyl, but the filming set is presented as the newest layer rather than part of the 1928 interior.

Jewish Kaunas is not a decorative backdrop

The house's first residents included affluent Kaunas professionals and Jewish families. The tour therefore moves beyond fine objects to the urban society whose daily life was destroyed by the 1940 occupation, war, and the Holocaust.

It is important not to assign every exhibit to a named former resident. Some furnishings are carefully selected period examples that reconstruct a plausible setting rather than the apartment's complete original inventory. Original building fabric, restored finishes, and the collected objects together form an evidence-led interpretation, not an untouched 1928 time capsule.

Entry only with a booked tour

The museum has no conventional daily opening schedule. Entry requires a place in the official tour calendar, and group capacity is limited. At the time of research in 2026, a standard ticket for the roughly two-hour experiential tour cost €25, with the same price listed for all guests. Always recheck the date, language, price, and change conditions on the official website before buying.

The experience is recommended for visitors aged 14 and over because the narrative is long and the rooms contain many fragile objects within reach. The museum says that up to 30 minutes may follow the programme for independent viewing and questions, so reserve about two and a half hours altogether.

A visitor toilet is available inside the apartment, but the building has no lift. The only route to the third floor is by stairs, an essential limitation for anyone who finds climbing difficult. Contact the museum before purchasing if you need to discuss individual access.

Finding the entrance and continuing the route

The exact Google Maps listing leads to Vytauto pr. 58-6, not to the same founders' Art Deco Museum on Gedimino Street. On 27 July 2026 it showed 4.9 out of 5 from about 671 reviews. Both the score and count change, so the date matters as much as the figure.

The museum stands in Kaunas New Town, near the railway station, Ramybė Park, and the Žaliakalnis slopes. The Art Deco Museum is the clearest thematic continuation, though two long tours need not be packed into one day. A lighter architecture route can add the exterior of Kaunas State Philharmonic, the Resurrection Basilica, or other buildings within the UNESCO-listed modernist city.
