From the edge of Varėna to Lake Žiežulis

The trail begins on the south-western edge of Varėna, on the right side of Marcinkonių Street when travelling towards Marcinkonys. The coordinates mark the official trailhead by Marcinkonių g. 16, not the lakeside beach.

This is a linear route. The walk to the lake is roughly 1.5 km, making about 3 km when you return by the same path. Municipal and local descriptions sometimes give the trail as 3 km long, so for practical planning it is best to read that number as the complete out-and-back walk.

A sandy pine-forest path with recreation features

The broad compacted-earth and sandy path winds through characteristic Dzūkija pine forest, crosses small changes in relief, and passes over a stream on a wooden bridge. The clear route does not demand difficult navigation, but it is not a paved urban footway.

Wooden strength and balance challenges, swings, a slide, benches, and playful shelters resembling chanterelle mushrooms stand along the way. They make the trail attractive to families, but their condition can change, so use only equipment that is visibly sound.

What awaits by the lake

The route reaches a recreation area on Lake Žiežulis. It includes a sandy beach, changing cabins, and places to rest, although the availability and upkeep of facilities depend on the season.

The lake is more than a scenic finish, but swimming conditions must be judged from same-day information. In June 2026, Varėna District Municipality reported abundant benthic cyanobacterial colonies and commissioned further research. It said the identified species was not considered toxin-producing, while the lake's condition was still under investigation.

Planning the walk

Allow 45-60 minutes for an ordinary out-and-back walk, and longer with children or a stop by the lake. Sand and roots may make small pushchair wheels difficult to use, while individual stretches can soften after rain.

A large official car park at the trailhead could not be confirmed. Leave a vehicle only in a lawful, safe place without obstructing traffic on Marcinkonių Street. Before swimming, check the municipality's latest water-testing notice and signs on site.
