Šančiai Church

From a warehouse to an independent parish

Rapidly growing Šančiai lacked suitable worship space in the early 20th century. A warehouse was adapted in 1914 through Father Teodoras Benediktavičius, and in 1919 worshippers took over a former Imperial Russian powder store on A. Juozapavičiaus Avenue.

Šančiai became independent of the Carmelite parish in 1930. For its large but mostly modest-income working community, a new church was both a liturgical need and a project of neighbourhood independence.

Modernist construction in 1935-1938

Design work lasted several years. Algirdas Šalkauskis submitted a scheme in 1935, and Adolfas Netyksa produced a revised drawing in 1936. AUTC records that Netyksa and then engineer V. Peldavičius withdrew from supervision in 1937; an inspection that year found structural defects and departures from the approved project.

Construction nevertheless ended in 1938. Reinforced-concrete calculation and supervision are associated with engineer Pranas Markūnas, an early Lithuanian specialist in the technology. The complicated sequence makes the church more than the unaltered vision of one author.

Two low towers emphasise the rectangular mass. Square doors, narrow vertical windows, undecorated planes and an early Lithuanian thin-shell reinforced-concrete roof connected the church visually with industrial Šančiai.

Truikys's fresco and Ušinskas's stained glass

Liudas Truikys's Byzantine-inspired fresco Angels marks the presbytery arch. Its rhythmic figures reinforce the architecture's movement toward the altar rather than functioning as incidental decoration.

AUTC dates Stasys Ušinskas's stained glass in the rear facade to the postwar period, so it should not be described as an unchanged element of the 1938 scheme. Fresco, stained glass and concrete space form a composition assembled in more than one historical phase.
