The only wooden Catholic church in the city
The Pavilniai and Verkiai Regional Parks authority identifies this as the only wooden Catholic church within Vilnius city. Its scale evokes a resort or suburban settlement rather than a metropolitan basilica, and that is central to its local identity.
The idea of a chapel in the Pavilnys railway workers' colony emerged in 1927, and a decision to build followed in 1929. Construction was completed in 1935, and Vilnius Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski consecrated it on 7 July that year. The parish was established in 1939.
Father Konstantinas Molis renewed the church after the Second World War. It remains an active Lithuanian- and Polish-speaking sanctuary, so the bilingual service pattern continues local history rather than decorating a tourist attraction.
Zakopane style translated into Pavilnys timber
The Zakopane style popular in the interwar Vilnius region combined mountain-inspired silhouettes, prominent roofs, and decorative structural woodwork. At Pavilnys it appears in the massive square tower, open galleries, stepped cornices, shingled roofs, and ornamental crosses.
The church is a rectangular, three-aisled basilica. A lower chancel ends in a three-sided apse; the sacristy adjoins the left aisle, and a chapel the right. The central aisle projects slightly on the principal facade and ends in a triangular gable.
Profiled timber posts and carved braces carry the open porch. The double doors have a diamond-board pattern, and a relief of St Christopher, patron of Vilnius, occupies the gable. Vertical boarding and a herringbone pattern enliven the facade without masonry ornament.
Details to find in the timber interior
Wood lines the interior as well as the exterior, and four square piers divide the three aisles. A balustrade fronts the organ loft. The restrained construction makes it easy to see timber functioning as both structure and finish.
A Crucifix adorns the high altar and tabernacle, with a painting of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus above. The side altar contains an image of St Joseph. Together, these furnishings connect the timber architecture with the parish's dedications and patron saints.
The chapel altar holds an icon of Our Lady of Mercy of the Gate of Dawn with a metal cover and a collection of 154 votive offerings. Votives record gratitude or petition over time; their number documents devotion but does not prove any particular miracle.
Churchyard, cemetery, and nearby details
The churchyard contains a monument with Our Lady of Graces and the words Ave Maria, plus a statue of St Joseph in another part of the grounds. The adjacent cemetery dates from 1944. Do not interrupt funerals or photograph private graves closely without relatives' consent.
Circle the building from a distance before approaching the porch. Its side elevations reveal the differing heights of the three aisles, apse, sacristy, chapel, and the smaller open turret above the central roof ridge.
Shingles and timber cladding are vulnerable to fire and moisture. Do not smoke in the churchyard, touch fragile carvings, or fly a drone over rites or graves without the necessary permission.

On 27 July 2026, the Archdiocese listed opening from 5 pm to 6.30 pm Monday-Friday, 8 am to 11 am Saturday, and 7 am to 2 pm Sunday. Mass was at 6 pm in Lithuanian on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and in Polish on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; Sunday services were at 9 am and 1 pm in Polish and 11 am in Lithuanian. There is no ticket for an ordinary individual visit. Come during opening hours between ceremonies, remain quiet, and do not photograph worshippers without consent. Arrange group or special-event conditions with the parish in advance.
