Central Square means one specific site at 96A Vytauto Street, not all of central Palanga

Palanga's official documents identify Central Square as 96A Vytauto Street. Other municipal descriptions place it between the properties at 1 and 7 Kretingos Street, beside Vytauto Street and toward Senojo Turgaus Street. Coordinates 55.918610, 21.067441 mark a representative point in the open square, not a parking bay or the only entrance.

A continuous field of warm-toned paving, the circular fountain and flowerbeds around the edges make the square recognisable on the ground. Opening hours for the adjacent shops, cafés and other premises do not apply to the square. The carriageway on Vytauto Street is not part of its pedestrian event area unless traffic has been closed for a particular occasion.

Older descriptions sometimes call Central Square a site beside the bus station. That landmark is obsolete: Palanga's present intercity bus station has operated at 42 Klaipėdos Road since 2014, roughly one kilometre from the centre. City buses may still stop near the square, but there is no longer an intercity coach platform here.

The square took shape in the late Soviet period and was substantially renewed in 2005

Palanga Central Square is not an old market square whose plan has survived from the town's earliest period. VLE's architectural chronology says this urban space was completed in 1985. That date helps explain the restrained composition, broad open surface and scale of the late twentieth-century buildings around it.

The square was reconstructed in the early twenty-first century. Palanga Municipality's 2005 activity report assigned LTL 630,000 to the reconstruction of the central city square, while the rebuilding of J. Basanavičius Street was also completed that year. They were two separate projects, although both contributed to the renewal of the resort centre.

Its present character rests less on a single ceremonial monument than on paving and everyday amenities: reddish, russet and yellow clinker blocks, circular lines, water set into the surface, curved flowerbeds and benches. No dependable source reviewed for this page confirmed the reconstruction architect, so no name should be attributed to the project without further evidence.

A public discussion proposed more greenery, children's facilities, seating and possibly a small temporary stage in June 2025. This was an invitation to suggest ideas, not a completed scheme. No approved construction start schedule appeared in the official sources checked by 21 July 2026, so those suggestions should not be mistaken for features already in the square.

The circular fountain is seasonal, but it is not Palanga's musical fountain

Central Square's fountain is a broad circular water feature set level with the surrounding paving. Slender jets rise from a ring and fall onto the wet surface, which almost merges back into the open square when the water is off. There is no raised pool edge, bronze sculpture or permanent performance stage here.

A 2022 municipal notice listed the Central Square fountain separately from the musical fountain, the fountain in Jūratė and Kastytis Square, the Palanga Concert Hall fountain and floating installations in the Rąžė River. The programme of music, coloured lights and requested tracks belongs to the fountain in Independence Square at 71 Vytauto Street, not this one.

Palanga normally starts its fountains during the warmer part of the year, but the 2022 opening date is not a permanent annual timetable. Wind, cold weather, maintenance or event structures can affect operation. No authoritative daily schedule for 2026 was found, so treat the fountain as a seasonal feature rather than a guaranteed show.

Four public spaces in central Palanga have different addresses and purposes

Central Square at 96A Vytauto Street is a meeting place and temporary event venue. The musical fountain stands in Independence Square at 71 Vytauto Street. Palanga's list of approved public-event locations names those addresses separately, so they should not be merged into one map attraction.

Jūratė and Kastytis Square lies at the western end of J. Basanavičius Street, before the route to the beach and Palanga Pier. A bronze sculpture by Nijolė Gaigalaitė stands in its fountain. Neither that sculpture nor direct access to the sea is present in Central Square.

Palanga Concert Hall is at 43 Vytauto Street, while the Kurhaus is at 1 Counts Tyszkiewicz Avenue. Their forecourts host concerts and city celebrations but are not part of the square at 96A. A useful walking route can link all these sites along Vytauto and J. Basanavičius streets, but each needs its own map pin and event timetable.

An everyday resting place becomes a temporary stage during city celebrations

Without an event, Central Square is a practical place for a short pause: visitors can sit beside the flowerbeds, watch the fountain or meet before continuing through the centre. Its architectural value lies not in a monumental façade but in an open public surface that remains permeable to several pedestrian routes.

The square has hosted choir and brass-band performances, fairs, community activities, cycle-ride starts and winter events in different years. Palanga Municipality's 2026 calendar included Central Square, together with J. Basanavičius, Vytauto and Jūratė streets, in the Palangos Stinta festival area. That confirms its continuing event role, but does not mean the same stage or programme occupies it every day or returns to precisely the same place each year.

Stalls, equipment and temporary barriers may cover part of the paving during a fair or concert. The fountain may be stopped and traffic on nearby streets altered. Dates, times and any admission charges belong to the organiser, so check the latest Palanga Municipality or Palanga Culture Centre programme before travelling for a specific event.

The square is free and easy to cross, while central parking is seasonal

Central Square is an ungated public outdoor space with no admission charge and can be crossed at any hour. The fountain, surrounding businesses and temporary events follow separate schedules. No dedicated round-the-clock public toilet in the square could be confirmed, so consult the municipality's current public-toilet and drinking-water map for the nearest facility.

The level hard surface is generally suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The circular fountain area becomes wet and may be slippery while operating, however, and event crowds or temporary structures can narrow the clear route. The low flowerbed edges are not designed as a riding or wheeling surface.

For 2026, Palanga Municipality announced charges in designated zones from 07:00 to 24:00 inclusive between 15 May and 15 September, with tariffs varying by colour zone. This does not mean cars may park in the pedestrian square itself. Follow signs on the particular street and check official rates before travelling, as arrangements can change.

Intercity buses arrive at the station at 42 Klaipėdos Road. From there, the square is roughly a one-kilometre walk, or a city bus may be suitable; check the route and stop on the day. On a summer weekend, parking farther from the busiest part of the centre can be easier than searching beside the square.
