Katkus's birthplace in Ažytėnai
The Mikalojus Katkus Memorial Museum stands in Ažytėnai, Kėdainiai District, on the street named for the writer. A small dark wooden house with white shutters and a low fence retains the scale of a village homestead and gives the exhibition a strong sense of place.
The exhibition presents Mikalojus Katkus (1852-1944), an agronomist, educator, folklore collector, and writer. Drawn from the Kėdainiai Regional Museum collection, it connects his biography with Ažytėnai and with rural Lithuanian life at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Mikalojus Katkus's life
Mikalojus Katkus was born in Ažytėnai in 1852 and died there in 1944. After Šiauliai Gymnasium, he studied at the Petrovskoye-Razumovskaya Academy of Agriculture and Forestry from 1874 to 1878, then returned to Lithuania and worked in agronomy.
Katkus was more than Lithuania's first qualified agronomist. He distributed Aušra, taught children to read in Lithuanian, founded a primary school in Ažytėnai in 1919, and recorded stories, legends, proverbs, memories of the 1863 uprising, and local people's experiences.
Balanos gadynė and the nineteenth-century village
The work most closely associated with Katkus is Balanos gadynė, published in 1931. It is an ethnographic account of mid-nineteenth-century peasant life, customs, social relationships, and surroundings in the Ažytėnai area.
The museum's objects are best read as context for that book. Work tools, household details, and traces of early village schooling help visitors understand the world Katkus observed and described, turning local experience into an important document of Lithuanian cultural memory.
Memorial display and village setting
The museum was established in 1965 and belongs to the Kėdainiai Regional Museum's network of branches. Its exhibition focuses on Katkus's life, writing, and work, while also presenting the rural world of the early twentieth century, so it is worth looking beyond the biographical labels.
Ažytėnai gives the exhibition another layer: visitors can picture the landscape in which Katkus formed his observations about people and custom. The house's modest scale is not a limitation but a way to feel how literary memory takes root in a particular homestead.
