Meironų Nature Trail, Meironys Educational Trail

A trail between Palūšė, Meironys, and Lake Lūšiai

Meironys Nature Trail lies beside Lake Lūšiai, between Palūšė and Meironys villages in Aukštaitija National Park. The trail has introduced visitors to the region's nature for more than two decades, and the route reconstructed in 2021 was renamed the Meironys Nature Trail.

This is not a straight lakeside promenade. The route rises and falls through a maze of steep-sided hills, with woodland, wet hollows, small lakes, and streams appearing one after another. Even the shortest loop feels more like a relief hike than a flat walk.

Three loops with three different characters

The yellow relief loop is 3.7 km long. It is the most scenic section, crossing two hills that look towards Lake Lūšiai. Choose it when you want to feel the park's hilly landscape within a shorter outing.

The green loop extends the walk to 5 km through a wet hollow containing two small lakes known as Laumiakėlių eyes. The blue Lake Tarama loop is 5.5 km, circling Lake Tarama and revealing a different mix of forest habitats and a water body surrounded by local legends.

These lengths describe separate choices, not one mandatory 14.2 km route. Check which colour you have chosen and follow the arrows and trail markings at junctions.

Hills, wet hollows, and wooden boardwalks

The renewed trail's main feature is its pronounced relief. Some hillsides feel like natural little roller-coasters, while lower ground forms wetter habitats. The green loop crosses wet sections on wooden boardwalks and bridges, so the setting changes from drier woodland to the edge of a wetland.

Forest floor, roots, steps, and damp boards call for shoes with good grip. After rain, do not shortcut across a slope or wetland: stay on the marked route to avoid damaging sensitive vegetation and losing your footing.

Views of Lake Lūšiai and the Lake Tarama loop

The yellow loop reaches two hills looking towards Lake Lūšiai. These are not a high viewpoint with a single wide panorama, but several places where the water appears between trees and slopes. The view changes with the season: summer foliage frames it more tightly, while spring and autumn make the shore easier to read.

The blue loop circles Lake Tarama, which park information connects with local legends. Its purpose is not simply to reach the water quickly; it shows how dry slopes, damp woodland, and a lakeshore can meet within one national-park route.

The trail as a nature-school space

The trail's signs explain the area's landscape, plants, and animals. Some are designed as learning games, so the route can engage children as well as adult walkers who want to look for tracks, identify habitats, or follow the colour of their loop.

Saugoma also describes Meironys Nature Trail as an educational space for the Nature School. The signs are therefore part of the route rather than incidental notices: slow down, read them, and notice how changes in relief alter the vegetation.

Planning a visit

Saugoma gives the trail location as 55.336, 26.101. Because the route has several loops, this coordinate marks the trail area rather than guaranteeing a particular car park, entrance, or first sign. On arrival, follow current arrows, parking signs, and the park directorate's information.

The trail page does not give one general opening schedule or a separate ticket booth. It is an outdoor route, but visitors must follow Aukštaitija National Park rules, take waste away, avoid unauthorised fires, and respect any section temporarily closed by signs.

For a shorter visit choose the yellow loop; plan the green or blue loop as a longer hike with water, snacks, sturdy shoes, and tick protection. After rain or in cooler seasons, allow extra time.
