Ignalina Town Beach: a town swimming beach beside deep Lake Gavys

The town beach is on Gavys, not Lūšiai

Ignalina Town Beach lies at the south-western edge of the town on Lake Gavys. In its 2026 public documents, Ignalina District Municipality identifies it as the town beach on Gavys and connects it with Turistų g. 30A. That is a more useful identifier than the lake name alone, because several bathing places lie around Ignalina.

The Institute of Hygiene registers this monitored bathing site as Lake Gavys and gives the shorter name Gavio Beach. Gavio Beach, the Lake Gavys bathing site, and Ignalina Town Beach therefore refer to the same place here; Palūšė Beach on Lake Lūšiai is a separate site.

For navigation, use the municipality's Turistų g. 30A address or the beach coordinate 55.33542075, 26.14560080. Some maps may associate the point with Pagavaitis or Antagavė, so confirm that the selected place is on Lake Gavys at the south-western edge of Ignalina.

Gavys is a deep lake with three islands

The Encyclopaedia of Lithuania describes Gavys as a lake on the south-western edge of Ignalina. It covers 124 hectares, is 1.9 kilometres long, reaches 1.2 kilometres at its widest point, and has a surface elevation of 153 metres. From the beach, you are looking at a substantial lake landscape rather than a small urban pond.

Gavys reaches 39 metres at its deepest point, averages 10.1 metres, and has a 7.6-kilometre shoreline. Its northern part contains peninsulas and bays, while three islands have a combined area of about 2.3 hectares. One beach strip therefore cannot represent the bottom or shore conditions of the entire lake.

The encyclopedia records a narrow, mostly sandy and gravelly littoral zone and sparse vegetation. That helps explain the beach setting, but it does not promise the same bottom at every metre of the shore. Assess the exact entry point before swimming, especially if you plan to go beyond the shallow edge.

The beach is being improved, but a project is not a current facility list

On 15 April 2026, the Ignalina Town Eldership reported that fresh sand had been delivered and spread at the town beach on Lake Gavys. This is a concrete maintenance update, but adding sand does not by itself confirm that every changing, sanitary, or sports facility has already been renewed.

In autumn 2025, the municipality published the Lake Gavys visitor-adaptation project. It includes a car park, pier renewal, washed-sand beaches, a short-stay building with toilets and showers, sports courts, gazebos, changing cabins, a children's playground, and walking paths. Those are the project's planned works, not automatic proof that every item was complete on 1 August 2026.

A 2026 municipal notice confirms that seasonal public trading places were planned at the Gavys beach at Turistų g. 30A from 15 May to 15 September. A food stall or seasonal service is not the same as guaranteed beach equipment, so check current opening hours, prices, and the actual range of services on site.

Bathing safety still needs a current check

The Institute of Hygiene bathing-water profile says that water quality at the Lake Gavys bathing site met excellent-quality requirements throughout 2018-2024. That is an official longer-term classification, not the result of a sample taken on 1 August 2026. No same-day test report was found in the checked sources.

The National Public Health Centre advises choosing officially supervised bathing sites and checking the latest municipal and Institute of Hygiene data before swimming. Clear-looking water alone does not prove safety: cloudiness, an unusual smell, a changed colour, or an algal bloom are reasons to postpone bathing.

No dependable public 2026 lifeguard schedule was found. Unless the site clearly says otherwise, watch children continuously, do not dive into unknown water, and stay out after heavy rain or a pollution warning. The deep open water also demands extra buoyancy and weather awareness from anyone swimming or using a watercraft.

Address, arrival, and accessibility limits

The most reliable location description is Turistų g. 30A, Ignalina, on Lake Gavys. The map card's coordinate identifies the beach, but its Pagavaitis and Antagavė address is a reverse-geocoding label. If navigation proposes a different settlement name, check that the place name, lake, and coordinate still match.

The municipal project includes a car park, but the reviewed 2026 sources did not provide a dependable current capacity, parking fee, or occupancy description. Leave a vehicle only in a marked legal place, never on beach grass, forest floor, or a shore path.

No detailed current confirmation was found for a hard-surfaced route from parking to the water, an accessible toilet, or a beach wheelchair. Sand, a slope, and a pier may be easy for one visitor and a barrier for another. Contact the municipality in advance about a specific mobility or pushchair need.

Pair the swim with a day in and around Ignalina

For a short visit, allow two to four hours: choose a place on the sand or grass, assess the water, and bring drinking water, sun protection, and a bag for rubbish. A public beach is not permission to make a fire, camp, or leave a car anywhere along the lake shore.

The town beach pairs naturally with the Ignalina Regional Museum, where the history of the town, fishing, and the lake district continues indoors. For another part of the day, choose separate routes to Palūšė Beach and the Aukštaitija National Park Visitor Centre; each has its own distance, rules, and conditions.
