Kamanos Strict Nature Reserve Visitor Centre is at Pušų g. 2 in Akmenė II village, Akmenė District. It is the place to learn about the reserve's nature, bog formation, and the reasons why Kamanos cannot be treated like an ordinary urban park before entering the protected landscape.
The centre's purpose is not simply to provide a pretty bog view but to explain how visitation must support conservation. Its official programme list includes sessions about bog water, plants, the importance of bogs to nature and people, and sphagnum moss, as well as a virtual journey through the reserve.
The history and value of the Kamanos bog
Kamanos Strict Nature Reserve was established in 1979. The Kamanos bog began forming after the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago, so its relief and vegetation tell a much longer story than the buildings around the visitor centre.
Kamanos is a Ramsar wetland and a Natura 2000 site. Raised-bog expanses, forest islands, small pools, and rare plants and birds have survived here. Because of this international status, begin planning with the reserve rules rather than a spontaneous walk into the bog.
Education about water, plants, and sphagnum
The visitor-centre programme titles invite visitors to examine the bog from several angles. Bog Water Is Different explores the role of water in a raised bog, Bog Plants introduces its vegetation, and The Importance of Bogs to Nature and People explains why these areas matter beyond their rare species and habitats.
Sphagnum moss has its own programme because it forms peat, holds water, and helps maintain raised-bog conditions. It is better to learn this from a specialist than to pick or handle plants yourself. Sessions can be adapted for different age groups, so give the organisers the participants' ages and interests when booking.
Reserve rules and access limits
Kamanos is a strictly protected area. The directorate says that entering the reserve without a directorate employee is prohibited, so a map pin near the centre does not grant permission to walk independently into the bog, tower area, or educational route. Visits are organised as an agreed programme with an accompanying staff member.
This regime protects plants, the bog's water balance, wildlife quiet, and the fragile peat surface. Follow staff instructions, stay on the permitted route, avoid noise, leave no litter, and do not bring or fly a drone in the protected area without a separate authorisation.
Current status and planning a visit
The visitor centre reported on 9 June 2026 that it had been temporarily closed because of technical problems. Even though the normal schedule lists Tuesday-Friday 9:00-18:00 and Saturday 10:00-15:00, check the latest notice and contact the directorate before setting out.

Comfortable shoes, weatherproof clothing, and patience are more useful here than an unplanned roadside stop.
