Girionys Dendrological Park
More than 100 hectares on the upper Nemunas terrace
Girionys Park spreads across the upper Nemunas terrace beside the Kaunas Reservoir and Girionys. Saugoma.lt gives 108 ha, while the Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park inventory gives 104.45 ha, so the two figures should not be presented as an identical accounting measure.
Paths move between meadows, tree groups, and denser planting. The map point marks the centre of this broad park, not a gate or the only car park.
Algirdas Tauras's design, begun in 1960
Planting began in 1960 to a design by landscape architect and scholar Algirdas Tauras. Its connection with forestry institutions gave the vegetation both aesthetic and educational purpose.
The landscape style uses changing views, irregular groups, and path perspectives instead of strict symmetry. Notice how trees work singly, in rows, and in masses.
More than 250 species and ornamental forms
Saugoma.lt records more than 250 tree and shrub species and ornamental forms, including native trees, introduced species, and cultivars.
Memorial trees connect forestry, scholarship, and commemorative occasions. Their value lies in planting history as well as botanical rarity.
The Pakalniškiai trail crosses the south-western park
The regional park authority states that the Pakalniškiai Nature Trail crosses the south-western part of Girionys Park. Its nearly 3 km route between Girionys and Pakalniškiai Hillfort rises and falls along the reservoir shore.
This is a useful way to extend a dendrological walk into a more active hike. The trail is not circular, has branches, and can change with wet weather and water level, so plan footwear and the return journey in advance.
Planning a walk
Allow at least an hour for a first circuit through contrasting planting. A longer day can add Dubrava Arboretum, the reserve trail, or the reservoir shore.
This is a protected dendrological site. Do not drive through planting, break branches, or collect plants, and take care around old trees after storms.
