Garment and fabric
Trinyčiai are mainly associated with men’s dress. Linen or tow-linen fabric distinguishes them from a woollen sermėga. Their name relates to three-shaft weaving, but the material of each museum object needs individual verification.
Do not infer fibre from whiteness: unbleached, dyed and worn textiles look different. The catalogue’s material identification matters more than the photograph’s colour.
Wearing and purpose
Trinyčiai could be worn over a shirt or over other outer clothing. That layering makes “summer jacket” an incomplete description. Locality, date and a specific account explain a particular use.
Observe the fastening and any belt or sash: gathering changes a loose garment’s silhouette. Clothing on a hanger may not show how it looked when worn.
Reading the name in context
An older account using this name does not necessarily describe exactly the same garment as a modern reconstruction. Read the whole sentence: is it discussing fabric, a shirt, outerwear or a weaving structure?
Searches also return the Klaipėda textile enterprise Trinyčiai. The factory’s history cannot establish when the rural garment originated or where people wore it.
