Žvelgaičiai Lake: a 26.5-hectare lake in the recreational zone of Žagarė Regional Park

Žvelgaičiai Lake is a 26.5-hectare waterbody in the recreational zone of Žagarė Regional Park, in the southwestern part of Žagarė. It is surrounded by the pine woods and hills of Žagarė Esker, while a bathing and leisure zone by the shore is included in Joniškis District water-quality monitoring. The lake is not the same place as nearby Žvelgaitis Hillfort: the water, esker trail, and hillfort make one route but should be described separately.

Žvelgaičiai Lake in Žagarė, Žvelgaičiai Lake

Žvelgaičiai Lake in Žagarė Regional Park's recreation zone

Žvelgaičiai Lake lies in the southwestern part of Žagarė, in Žagarė Regional Park. Town and park roads lead from the centre towards the recreation zone; the most precise reference is the lake visitor point at 56.3504826, 23.2192047.

This is more than a waterbody visible from the road. The lake brings together rest areas, a bathing site, pinewoods, and esker hills, so a visit can be a short lakeside stop or the start of a longer outing.

Do not confuse Žvelgaičiai Lake with Žvelgaitis Hillfort. The hillfort is a separate archaeological site in the esker landscape, while the lake has its own bathing and recreation conditions.

A 26.5-hectare waterbody among esker hills

VLE gives Žvelgaičiai Lake an area of 26.5 hectares. It belongs to the basin of the Lielupė's smaller tributaries and is associated with the Švėtė. Water plants change the view from the open bathing area to more reedy and wooded stretches.

Žagarė Esker creates unusual relief around the lake: pinewoods grow on sandy hills while the water occupies a lower hollow. A photograph can therefore contain both open water and a higher forest wall, and the walk is not completely level.

The lake has abundant aquatic vegetation and habitat suitable for waterbirds. Watch nature from paths and designated recreation places, do not enter reed beds for a better photograph, and do not feed birds.

Bathing and recreation zone

Žvelgaičiai Lake is included in Joniškis District bathing-water monitoring. The municipality lists it among sites where water conditions are assessed during the bathing season, but check the latest notice before swimming.

Protected-area information describes a recreation zone beside the lake where visitors use the shore, rest areas, and event spaces. The exact condition of benches, shelters, play equipment, or water access can change with the season and maintenance.

Follow signs at the bathing site, do not jump from unfamiliar places, supervise children, and do not swim farther than you can safely return. The natural shore and esker slopes also mean roots, sand, and wet sections, so not every stretch suits a wheelchair.

Fishing and a protected landscape

Žvelgaičiai Lake is used not only for swimming but also for recreational fishing. Before fishing, check the permit regime, waterbody manager's information, and seasonal restrictions currently in force.

Leave cars only in designated places, not on the pine-forest floor, sandy esker slope, or right beside the water. Do not drive onto a shore route intended for walkers or park maintenance, and keep access clear for emergency and service vehicles.

The value of Žagarė Regional Park is not only its visitor equipment. Reed beds, pinewoods, waterbirds, and esker relief form a sensitive system, so take rubbish away, use fires only where a marked place allows them, and do not damage vegetation.

How to plan a lake visit

One or two hours is enough for a lakeside rest, while combining the lake with the Žagarė Esker trail, hillforts, and manor can fill half a day or more. Decide whether swimming or exploring the lake and esker is the main purpose before setting out.

The trail by the lake and esker hills includes sections with stairs, sand, or uneven ground. Wear shoes with good grip after rain, carry water on hot days, and expect slippery slopes and shorter daylight in autumn or winter.

Combine Žvelgaičiai Lake with separate Žvelgaitis Hillfort, Raktuvė Hill, Žagarė Manor Estate, and the esker trail. Choose a specific destination in navigation because the lake shore, beach, and hillfort are not one address.
