Vyžuonos Park in Utena: a 35 ha stream-valley park with active-recreation trails

Vyžuonos Park is Utena's largest developed urban green space, listed by the municipality at 35 ha. It follows a stream valley between the Dauniškis and Aukštakalnis neighbourhoods, with walking and cycling paths, low bridges, grassy slopes, mixed woodland, playgrounds, and outdoor sport areas. Two investment phases in 2008-2013 created its principal recreation infrastructure and connected it with Utena City Garden. This is not Vyžuonaitis Park by the lake. Part of Vyžuonos Park and the neighbouring sports-centre approaches is being renewed through 2028, so padel courts and new BMX, skate, parkour, and other proposed facilities should not be assumed open without a newer municipal confirmation.

Vyžuonos parkas

The 35 ha Vyžuonos Park is not Vyžuonaitis Park or Dauniškis Park

Utena District Municipality's green-space list assigns 35 ha to the developed Vyžuonos Park, making it the largest Utena park in that list. Figures of 38 or 38.03 ha also appear in master-plan and renewal documents, but they describe functional or project territories defined for different purposes. The 38.03 ha figure is therefore not a more precise answer to the ordinary visitor's question about the area of the developed park itself.

The park follows the Vyžuona and Utenėlė valley between the Dauniškis and Aukštakalnis neighbourhoods. Its southern path network connects with Utena City Garden, although the two remain separate green spaces. Vyžuonaitis is a lake in another part of Utena with its own 8.7 ha park, while Dauniškis Park centres on Lake Dauniškis and its fountain.

Vyžuonos Park has no single principal gate or one exact street address. The coordinate on this page marks a representative point in the main valley-path system, not a car park, the only entrance, or a guaranteed step-free approach. Visitors enter from several sides around Dauniškis, Aukštakalnis, and the sports centre.

Two investment phases in 2008-2013 shaped today's path-based park

Utena regional project records date the first comprehensive Vyžuonos Park phase from October 2008 to February 2011. Its purpose was to create walking paths and routes for bicycles, skates, and roller skis, together with skate and viewpoint areas, forming a principal recreation and active-leisure zone for the town.

The second phase for the park and its approaches was scheduled from October 2011 to December 2013. The records specify up to 6,223 sq m of concrete-paver walking paths, 2,901 m of lighting networks, a pedestrian bridge across the Utenėlė, and a connection with City Garden beneath A. Baranauskas Street. They also document an approximately 200-seat amphitheatre, play infrastructure for children and teenagers, a Health Trail with outdoor exercise equipment, a BMX track, and sport areas with different surfaces.

This history explains why the park is more than an undeveloped stream bank. Its identity lies in a whole movement network through the valley: paths run close to the water, rise towards open slopes, and cross the streams on low bridges. Current official visitor information counts seven bridges in the park and ten exercise stations in the Health Trail.

Mixed woodland, open grass, and activity areas support different kinds of visit

The municipality's 2023 inventory recorded 3,842 woody plants in Vyžuonos Park: 1,403 trees and 2,439 shrubs representing 75 species or cultivars. Most were assessed in good or satisfactory condition, while a smaller share required attention. This helps explain occasional felling, pruning, replacement planting, or temporary work zones in a mature urban park.

For a quiet walk, follow the principal streamside paths and the sequence of bridges. For a more active stop, look for the Health Trail, outdoor exercise equipment, playgrounds, and amphitheatre. Disc-golf baskets are also visible in the park, but check a current course plan and any construction or event restrictions before planning a competitive round.

Official visitor information records a new grill area and playground beside a small park pond in 2025. Use only the clearly marked purpose-built area, follow on-site fire-safety and waste rules, and do not assume that a public toilet or food outlet will always be operating.

A short walk can focus on the valley core; a longer one can follow the whole green link

For a 45-60 minute walk, begin near the representative point, follow a path towards the stream, cross several bridges, and include one of the more open valley slopes. This captures the park's essential character without trying to visit every family or sport area.

For a 1.5-2 hour circuit, add the Health Trail stations, amphitheatre, a viewpoint, and the Aukštaitijos medis sculpture on the Aukštakalnis side. The official tourism strategy mentions an approximately 2.5 km route for skates, bicycles, and roller skis, but the path network has branches, so your total distance depends on the chosen start and detours.

Continue south towards Utena City Garden and the confluence of the Krašuona and Vyžuona for a longer urban nature walk. This is the best way to understand Utena's connected green system, while remembering that City Garden and Vyžuonos Park are still distinct places. Cyclists should share the paths carefully and slow down near bridges and children's areas.

The public space has no published ticket office, but access is not equally easy everywhere

The checked official records publish no ticket office, admission fee, or formal gated opening schedule for the park. It functions as urban public space, although events, maintenance, construction, and temporary safety measures can close an individual path or area. Daylight is the most practical time for understanding the layout and seeing the facilities.

The main network includes hard-surfaced paths and lit sections, but the valley has gradients and some Aukštakalnis approaches use stairs. The current renewal project aims to improve accessibility, which is not evidence that a complete verified step-free circuit already exists. Wheelchair and pushchair users should assess the selected approach, surface, gradient, and construction situation on arrival.

Leave vehicles only in marked street or sports-centre approach spaces and obey current signs. Do not drive onto park paths or treat the representative coordinate as a parking instruction. Supervise children near the streams, pond, steeper slopes, and sport routes.

Projects running through 2028 may alter routes and do not mean every proposed facility is open

The EU investment register marks the renewal of part of Vyžuonos Park and the Utena multi-purpose sports-centre approaches as under implementation. The municipality gives a project period from 12 July 2024 to 31 July 2028. Intended results include a renewed family area, an accessible sanitary facility, artistic lighting, two padel courts, new BMX, parkour, and skate areas, and a seasonal multi-purpose sports court by the sports centre.

The 38.03 ha renewal territory includes part of the park and the sports-centre approaches, so it should not replace the municipality's listed 35 ha area for the park. Likewise, a list of target results is not a list of services available today. Until a newer opening announcement appears, do not assume the padel courts or new BMX, skate, and parkour areas are ready to use.

The municipality's 2026-2028 budget presentation says a four-level climbing and adventure park was still planned for 2026, while BMX, skate, and parkour work was due to begin. Another project is intended to reconstruct parts of the walking and cycling network through 2028. Before travelling for one facility, event, or uninterrupted circuit, check the latest municipal notices and on-site barriers.
