Regional History beside the Square

Utena Regional Museum is the main history and ethnography museum of the Utena area, located beside Utenio Square in the town centre. It holds about 78,000 exhibits and tells the history of the region from the fifteenth century to the present.

The museum is also the centre of a wider network: six branches belong to it across Utena District. It is therefore best understood not only as one exhibition, but as the hub of the region's museum system.

A Historic Building on Utenio Square

The museum occupies one of the oldest buildings in central Utena, the former Goldfain merchant house, where the wholesale warehouse Progresas operated. The building matters for civic history too: in 1918 the first Utena municipality began work here, and the facade commemorates the Act of Independence signatory Steponas Kairys.

The museum acquired the building in 1957. In 2000-2001 a major reconstruction joined two neighbouring buildings and created a new exhibition.

Museum History from 1929

The museum was founded on November 22, 1929, when the Utena County Board authorized school inspector Antanas Namikas to establish it. Until 1940 it was called the Utena History Museum.

During the Soviet occupation, from 1940 to 1945, the museum did not operate, and most of its exhibits were destroyed or looted. Activity resumed after the war, and the collections gradually grew again.

Exhibitions and Collections

Several permanent exhibitions operate in the museum: Utena town history, archaeology, ethnography and old sculpture, and crafts and trades. The ethnography section includes an Aukštaitija stancija, or formal room, and a peasant cottage interior with a stove.

One of the most valuable archaeological exhibits is a stone snake-headed hoe dated to the second millennium BCE. The museum also keeps important hoards, including the Vosgėliai hoard and part of the Labanoras hoard.

Branches and Visiting

Utena Regional Museum unites six branches: Tauragnai Regional Museum, the Vytautas Valiušis Ceramics Museum and Art Centre in Leliūnai, the Antanas and Motiejus Miškinis Homestead in Juknėnai, the traditional crafts centre Svirnas, and the Freedom Fights Museum in the old narrow-gauge railway station.

The main museum is open Tuesday to Saturday; at the time of research a ticket cost about 2 EUR. Check current opening hours and prices, especially if you plan to visit branches as well.
