Vokiečių 6 is a museum branch name, not a reference to CAC
Since 2025, Vokiečių 6 has been the official name of a Vilnius City Museum exhibition branch as well as its visitor address. The official map link resolves to 54.6783777, 25.28498 at the building at 6 Vokiečių Street. The marker identifies the museum site, not a parking bay or a separately verified step-free entrance.
This branch must not be confused with the Contemporary Art Centre. CAC is a separate institution at 2 Vokiečių Street, in the white 1967 modernist building closer to Town Hall Square. Vokiečių 6 occupies ground-floor and basement rooms in a historic building and focuses on Vilnius, its residents, and their experiences.
Changing names explain much of the older information online. From 2021 to 2025, the institution and its only venue were known as the Vilnius Museum. After the 2025 reorganisation, the four-branch institution became Vilnius City Museum, and the original Vokiečių Street venue became Vokiečių 6. Still older listings for a Museum of Illusions or children's restaurant describe previous occupants of the premises, not today's display.
Two or three exhibitions a year mean there is no single permanent route
Vokiečių 6 stages two or three research-led exhibitions each year about Vilnius and its residents. The municipality describes the programme as examining forgotten, uncomfortable, and currently relevant urban subjects. It is therefore neither a fixed chronology from Gediminas's letters to the present nor a storehouse displaying every important object associated with the capital.
The branch collects oral history, personal recollections, and micro-histories, and works with communities around the city. Exhibitions may appear not only on Vokiečių Street but also in Viršuliškės, Vilkpėdė, Baltupiai, and other districts. A project mentioned in an older article may no longer be in the gallery, while an off-site exhibition has its own address.
Several educational programmes are developed for each temporary exhibition, tailored to its theme and different ages. Audio guides are common, Lithuanian Sign Language guides often accompany exhibitions, and audio description is produced for some shows. A particular language, tactile object, family trail, or guide cannot be treated as permanent and must be checked against the current exhibition.
On 19 July 2026, standard hours did not by themselves confirm an open exhibition
Vokiečių 6 states that exhibitions change in January and July and that the museum closes for about three weeks while the next display is installed. On 19 July 2026, its official page listed Rasos: A Living Cemetery as the next exhibition, from 24 July to the end of the year, and showed no currently running exhibition. Before 24 July, it was therefore unsafe to rely on the standard timetable without separately confirming that the installation closure had ended.
Outside changeovers, the published schedule is Tuesday to Friday from 15:00 to 19:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00, with Monday closed. The museum also closes on public holidays except Mother's Day and Father's Day. Exhibition openings are free, but their individual times do not replace the regular schedule.
On the research date, full admission to Vokiečių 6 was €5 and a concession was €2.50. A €10 combined ticket allowed one visit to each of the four Vilnius City Museum branches. Entry to Vokiečių 6 was free on the last Sunday of each month. Prices, eligible free-entry groups, and combined-ticket terms can change, so confirm the final tariff on the ticket page.
A temporary 2020 venue became the first point in a four-branch network
In 2020, Vilnius City Council allocated 751.31 square metres on the ground floor and in the basement at 6-10 Vokiečių Street for the new museum. The rooms were initially intended for five years while a permanent home was selected. The 6-10 range in municipal records describes the transferred premises; today's public entrance address is 6 Vokiečių Street.
The first venue opened to visitors in spring 2021. In 2025, Markučiai Manor, Beatričė's House, and the Centre for Wooden Architecture joined what had been the Vilnius Museum. The Vokiečių Street space thus changed from the institution's only address into one of four Vilnius City Museum branches, connected by a combined ticket and coordinated opening hours.
Vokiečių 6 is still officially described as a temporary venue. The museum hopes to move to the restored Kirdiejai Mansion by the end of 2027, where a permanent introduction to Vilnius, temporary displays, a reading room, and the administration are planned. This is a future project rather than a completed move. Until an official change is announced, look for Vokiečių Street exhibitions in the current branch programme.
The entrance is hidden in an archway, and not every part of the route is equally accessible
Approaching from Town Hall, the museum is on the left side of Vokiečių Street. Its entrance is inside the archway at number 6 and is shared with the neighbouring cafe. The metal gates are open during working hours. Continue down the corridor until the museum door and current exhibition poster appear on the right. The cafe's opening hours are not the museum's opening hours.
The nearest public-transport landmark is the Rotušė stop, and bicycle racks stand opposite the museum. Drivers use paid blue-zone spaces on Vokiečių Street rather than a dedicated museum car park; the official page listed €2.50 per hour on 19 July 2026. There is one type-B accessible parking bay opposite the entrance, but the museum cannot guarantee that it will be available.
The official accessibility description gives an entrance width of about 95 centimetres but calls the entrance ramp quite steep. A small difference between two gallery levels is bridged by a ramp, and an accessible toilet is provided at the rear, although the museum lists limitations in its fittings. Guide animals are welcome. Visitors who may need assistance should contact staff before arriving.
Families and quieter visitors should plan around the individual exhibition
Vokiečių 6 aims to add child-friendly elements to every exhibition, such as an alternative trail, activity table, or set of tasks. One Saturday morning each month is used for a family day. Toilets at the rear include child- and disability-adapted facilities and a baby-changing table, while pushchairs and wheelchairs can use the ramp between the gallery levels.
Children under seven and school pupils with identification enter free, as do other groups listed on the museum's ticket page. A particular exhibition may nevertheless have distinctive sound, visual, or thematic features. Families should read the current exhibition description rather than judge suitability only from the museum's general profile.
Weekdays from 15:00 to 17:00 are usually quieter. About 1-1.5 hours is a reasonable allowance for one exhibition and the reading room, with more time needed for a tour, education session, or event. The last Sunday of the month and family days can be busier, so choose another weekday for the calmest visit.
