Amber beneath a historic house
The museum-gallery operates at Šv. Mykolo g. 8 in a seventeenth-century Baroque house where investigation found traces of Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical fabric. The brick vaults surrounding the underground display are more than a decorative backdrop: the plot also yielded evidence of two fifteenth-century ceramic kilns.
This compact private venue is both museum and commercial gallery. The museum explains amber's origin, properties, and archaeological importance, while the gallery displays and sells contemporary pieces. Visitors should distinguish the interpretive collection from the retail display, although the two functions deliberately coexist.
A material fifty million years old
Baltic amber formed from ancient tree resin about 50 million years ago. The displays show its varied colours, natural shapes, and inclusions preserving minute plants or animals. Such specimens present amber not merely as jewellery material but as a geological time capsule.
A piece weighing about 3 kg is among the museum's most memorable objects. Its scale is clearest when compared with small jewellery inserts. Notice how rough and polished amber differ: surface treatment can dramatically alter depth of colour and transparency.
A reconstruction of the Juodkrantė treasure
The famous Juodkrantė treasure was assembled during amber dredging in the Curonian Lagoon in the 1860s-1880s. VLE records 434 Middle Neolithic and Bronze Age amber objects, including human and animal figures, buttons, pendants, and other archaeological forms.
The Vilnius display is a reconstruction made from surviving records and images, not the complete set of 434 original objects. This distinction matters because many originals were lost and others are held abroad. The reconstruction conveys the collection's scale and variety but should not be mistaken for the original treasure.
