Galerija VARTAI in Vilnius Old Town’s cultural route
Galerija VARTAI occupies 39 Vilniaus Street in Vilnius and is a distinct visitor destination. St Catherine’s Church and the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum are close by, but their operators, programmes, and visitor rules are separate, so proximity should not turn them into one attraction.
The gallery offers a changing contemporary art and design programme rather than a finished collection from one period. Photography, graphics, painting, sculpture, video, and interdisciplinary work may all appear, so what you see depends on the date and on the exhibition then installed.
A history beginning in 1991 and reaching international biennials
The gallery’s history says that Galerija VARTAI was founded in 1991 by Nida Rutkienė and has operated as a contemporary art venue in Vilnius since then. That date places it among the city’s long-running independent cultural institutions rather than a temporary event pavilion.
The gallery became the first private Lithuanian institution to represent Lithuania at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and took part in the 6th Liverpool Biennial in 2010. These milestones belong to its history; the current exhibition programme may differ, so check the calendar before travelling.
Exhibitions, events, and a contemporary design strand
Galerija VARTAI’s activity is not limited to a single exhibition room. The official description mentions exhibitions, music concerts, book presentations, and readings, so the cultural calendar can change alongside the gallery’s art programme. In 2021 the gallery expanded its contemporary design activity by starting the VARTAI SHOWROOM. The SHOWROOM is a platform of the same operator, connecting art and original design rather than functioning as a separate attraction. An exhibition, design presentation, and event therefore belong to one changing programme.
A temporary programme rather than a permanent collection
The official gallery website listed Augustė Verikaitė and Saulė Šmidtaitė’s exhibition Memories, scheduled from 16 July to 20 September 2026. This is a dated programme entry, not a permanent VARTAI collection or a guarantee that the same works will remain after the closing date.
The scale feels closer to a working gallery and meeting space than to a large museum with several permanent halls. The visitor FAQ describes painting, sculpture, installations, design, and interdisciplinary work, while the actual display, opening, and private-viewing access should be confirmed before travelling.
VARTAI hours, free entry, and visit planning
Galerija VARTAI usually opens Wednesday to Friday from 14:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00; it is closed Monday, Tuesday, and Sunday. The end of the summer break may vary, so confirm the gallery's current opening information before setting out.
Ordinary gallery entry is free, and out-of-hours visits or private art viewings can be arranged in advance. A guaranteed step-free route, lift, toilet, or dedicated visitor parking is not confirmed, so ask the gallery about a specific access need.
