Surviliškis Suspension Bridge over the Nevėžis: a swaying pedestrian link between Surviliškis and Kazokai at a municipal boundary

A bridge joining more than two banks

The suspension footbridge crosses the Nevėžis at the southeastern edge of Surviliškis. The right bank belongs to Surviliškis and Kėdainiai District Municipality; the opposite side is part of Kazokai in Krekenava eldership, Panevėžys District. A visitor therefore crosses a municipal boundary near the middle of the bridge.

Saugoma.lt identifies it as one of two suspension bridges over the Nevėžis in Krekenava Regional Park. This is a working local foot link rather than a decorative park feature: its narrow timber deck hangs from steel cables and naturally moves a little under footsteps.

The 2022 repair and the name Neighbours' Bridge

Panevėžys District Municipality records the official reopening of the repaired bridge on 28 November 2022. Timber elements were replaced and the principal supports repainted on the Panevėžys District section, at a cost of almost €10,000.

At the reopening, the crossing received the symbolic name Neighbours' Bridge because it connects neighbouring municipalities and communities. No reliable date for the original construction of the present suspension bridge or authoritative total span was found in the official public sources, so figures repeated elsewhere online should not be presented as established fact.

The 2022 work is not an unlimited guarantee of current safety. Timber, fixings, and cables remain exposed to weather and loads, so barriers, warning signs, and the visible condition of the structure take priority on every visit.

The Nevėžis valley and Camino Lituano

The bridge stands in the Nevėžis landscape of Krekenava Regional Park, where flood meadows, steep valley edges, oxbows, and dense riparian trees follow the river. In summer, foliage can almost hide the water from the deck, making the experience less about sheer height than a narrow moving corridor between green banks.

The official Camino Lituano Paberžė-Kėdainiai stage descends through Surviliškis and over this bridge before continuing towards Šventybrastis and Šeteniai. The full stage is a long day walk, but a short visit can simply follow the path from the end of Pušyno Street to the bridge and return.

Why it is not the 1932 reinforced-concrete bridge

Surviliškis history includes another bridge. The single-span arched reinforced-concrete crossing designed by engineer Pranciškus Markūnas in 1932 was 57.6 metres long and 6 metres wide and cost 54,200 litas. It was blown up during the Second World War.

Its remains and a Kazokai viewing platform built on them lie roughly one kilometre north of the present suspension bridge, near 55.450, 24.045. Fragments are still visible in the riverbed. The suspension crossing at Pušyno Street is a separate pedestrian structure, not a reconstruction of the 1932 bridge.

Reaching and crossing it safely

Saugoma.lt directs visitors along a path from the end of Pušyno Street. The map point marks the bridge, not guaranteed parking. Leave vehicles only where signs permit, keep residential access clear, and walk the final section.

Before stepping on, look for barriers, warnings, loose boards, or damaged rails. Walk calmly, do not jump or deliberately sway the structure, avoid clustering, walk bicycles, and keep small children beside you. Do not use the bridge in strong wind, storms, icy conditions, ice movement, or high water.

Saugoma.lt explicitly states that the attraction is not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. There is no admission ticket or set timetable, but a temporary closure always overrides normal open access. The exact Google Maps listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from 130 reviews on 27 July 2026; the rating changes and does not certify structural condition.
